Are Slopestyle Olympians Related to Gumby?

Saturday, February 08, 2014

I'm watching these kids fly up into the air, twirling, and somersaulting, and landing on these hills....and all I can think of is...if I slip on the snowy sidewalk outside, I'll break something.

And when I see other videos on YouTube of extreme skiing where some of these people arrange to get dropped on top of a mountain with a severe sloping angle and then film themselves almost vertically falling...I am mesmerized.
Who was the first lunatic that thought:
"Gee, I'm bored. Why don't we try something really crazy today",
But hey, it is entertaining.

enjoy

  Hi Sheryl.........
I agree with CHRISTINATODAY. Once I broke bones, the way I skiied, skated, WALKED...........changed a lot!!!!! We also have to remember the hours and hours that they work to get their bodies ready for the moves they put them through. They are young, healthy, and GUMBY-LIKE, and also know what to do to hopefully prevent injury..........We hope so anyway!!!

I remember being invincible when I was young and stupid! Experience has taught me a lot, LOL... like ice hurts, bones break, and the older you get the slower you heal. But regrets... NOPE! Plans to do anything risky again? NOPE!

My guess is that once you've broken a few bones you get more careful...

I also think that there is NO comparison between a 20-year old body and a, say, 50 year old one! Different species, really!

I was watching TV late last night - one of those "can't believe anyone survived" shows. Yep, I'd be broken like a pretzel - snap, snap, crunch!

So far I haven't watched any more than the opening ceremonies. I'm not much into the ice and cold this year. There is enough on the ground from last Sunday. Brrr!

I am the same way. I worry about falling on the ice, while my students try to slide on the ice as much as possible. The Olympics are wonderful to watch..That extreme skiing is amazing!

While I was watching this, I commented to spouse that I imagine a lot of them would be troubled with arthritis and other aches/pains from broken bones, strains, etc., in their later years. Hopefully not.
