Manufacturers hide the sugar

Would you be surprised if we told you that of the 600,000 or so foods that are manufactured and consumed in the United States, over 80 percent of them contain added sugar? But, you say, you donít see sugar listed as an ingredient on the label. Well, the food manufacturers have it covered Ė sugar actually has over 50 different names, meaning that the food industry can easily pull one over on us by listing each of these ingredients separately.

Furthermore, as they list these ingredients on the label, they may appear as ingredient #3, #4, #7 and so on Ė so even if they are not the #1 ingredient, when you total up their presence they do in fact become the #1 ingredient. Pretty crafty, arenít they? The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that Americans consume about 156 pounds of added sugar annually, or over 31 five-pound bags per person.

Most of this sugar is probably consumed without the consumer even knowing it. If you eat packaged, bottled or canned foods with more than 5 ingredients, or ingredients you can not pronounce, chances are you are eating extra sugar.

Here are just a few of the names you may not be so familiar with:

Barley malt
Corn syrup solids
Fruit juice
Honey
Beet sugar
Date sugar
Fruit juice concentrate
Invert sugar
Brown sugar
Dextran
Glucose
Lactose
Buttered syrup
Dextrose
Glucose solids
Malt syrup
Cane-juice crystals
Diatase
Golden sugar
Maltodextrin

Of course one of the worst culprits of all time is high fructose corn syrup. This loosely bound, highly unstable sugar forms compounds that damage cells and tissue, and is linked to diabetes. When products with HFCS are consumed, there is a tremendous strain on the pancreas and, according to research, the risk of pancreatic cancer may increase.

It is awful! Not sugar free at all! No aspartame, they'll add sucralose! Yuck! We are so used to packaged foods, fast, convenient foods now, it really is no wonder so many are sick or dying or dead! We were looking at protein powder mixes yesterday and all the preservatives in them, we turned away. Even the sugar free ones had sucralose in it! Geeze!! Glucerna drinks recommended for diabetics even has sugar in it! Sodium is awful too...even Nutrisystem dinners we looked at the other day, had twice the sodium in it than regular frozen meals! Some diet food! Thanks for the information!
Hope you are doing better with maintenance now!

The only way that people can be assured of eating REAL food that is SAFE to eat is to grown their own from organic or heirloom seeds, without chemicals, and make their own meals. The 2nd best way is to purchase organic ingredients from local growers or food co-ops.

I'd like you to write a blog regarding the fact that on the labeled "food stuffs" the actual nutritional %'s is the item i.e. peas, corn, green beans, etc. is in their RAW form, not what is in the can. The 2nd idiocy of this lie is that the nutritional trackers do not distinguish between raw and prepared ingredients and the lack of nutrient it should indeed contain.

Now, THAT pisses me off big time.

Glad to see you post your normal educational blog.
