Obesity is far more than simply carrying around a few pounds, obesity destroys the will, destroys your dreams and eliminates your desire to reach, putting you into a rut of a defeated life. Soon your mind is trained not to expect anything out of yourself because that is easier than facing your condition head on and doing something about it. When you become morbidly obese, the walls of your world close in slowly until your comfort zone becomes a prison.
This is a path where I am learning that the only limits I have are the ones I allow myself to be fettered with. I look back and reflect on my past and I can plainly see a long process where my self confidence and self image died a slow and painful death. Losing weight and getting healthy is far more than fitting into the next size down, it is reprogramming yourself to accept the fact that you are capable and are able to push past limitations one step at a time.
I never viewed any challenge as an opportunity for growth, it was always viewed as yet another opening for all the world to see my ineptness and to suffer embarrassment. That is one of the things that makes morbid obesity such a killer. We all know about the health side of it but obesity is a destroyer of the soul. This is so much more than shedding the pounds, it is about reclaiming the life.
Today, I am a champion, not because I have never experienced failure and hurt, but because I have learned that to live the dream, you have to be willing to fail, learn, develop an action plan to get around it, then forge ahead.
To embrace failure is the foundation of success because it is one of the main ingredients. The moment we accept that and divorce our self image from this inevitable process, we win.
