A tragic end and a Warning

Friday, January 31, 2014

I write this not to solicit sympathy but to warn others to be mindful of pets/loved ones having access to what seem innocent things..... like dog treat bags...

I am in a sad state of shock. When R and I came home this morning, I
found Kharma dead in my bedroom. She had stuck her head into plastic, foil
lined bag of dog biscuits, and suffocated. There has been a similar bag of
biscuits in same place every day for 7 years and never has any dog ever
messed with it. Horrible! We tried to revive her and now she is being
cremated. I can take some solace in knowing we loved her so specially every
day of her life. She was our very best cuddler and will be missed.

Thank you so much for sharing this. We do the best we can in creating safe and loving environments for all the creatures with whom we share the planet. This was a very good warning to me, to make sure that ALL treats are safely stored. These loving creatures are so good with their noses, I need to remember that.

Our own, Quiggley, an Australian Shepherd, who is called Dr Quiggley by my surgical oncologist, accurately diagnosed my thyroid cancer. When I was in the recovery room after surgery, Dr Chang said, "Dr Quiggley was correct. You had seven cancerous tumors that are now gone. My thread was removed.

Quiggley knows when there is something wrong with either Mark or myself. Quiggley was never formally trained in this area.

Oh, Rebecca, I am SO sorry! Haven't been here for a while, and just read this blog. We never know (as I have so learned) what safety issues may be present....I would never have thought.

My heart goes out to you. Hope time has provided some healing. And that the pain of your loss is softening some.

So emoticon for your loss!! I know pets are people too and the loss you feel is no less than losing a family member. I hope it may help you to think that perhaps a child who had to leave this earth far too soon had made it to heaven and needed a pet. Kharma was chosen to be that angel's angel. She IS being loved and cared for until you meet her again when you are also called home.

Thinking of you and R. Sending big hugs and appreciation for your sharing. Similar things can happen with cats; the warning is not limited to dogs.
