It’s been a while so here is an update.

Made it through the holidays and finally getting back to boring normal. My SIL stayed with us for two weeks and that wreaked havoc on my sleep. She is so unhealthy and her circadian rhythms so screwed up that she was awake at night in our living room with the lights and TV on then would fall asleep in the middle of the day. This means that I had to keep our door closed to sleep which the cats did NOT like. Scratch, scratch, scratch, mom…….we want in. Scratch, scratch, scratch, mom…….we want out. Scratch, scratch, scratch, mom…….we want in again…… no we want out again. Mom…… up yet, you need to get up, I want to play. It hard to get mad as them since they are so freeking cute.

I still will not get on the scale but did feel that the weight went up a bit and it was probably due to too much wine. I have been feeling lately that it has been going back down.

I am still on the path of healing the hormones. In the past 2 months I have learned so much about hormones and I had a whole bunch of testing done in December and some of the tests came back a little better, some worse. There is a hormone that is called the mother hormone, pregnenolone. This is produced from cholesterol and is used to make all the sex hormones and cortisol. Well……..mine level is like at the bottom of the grand canyon and this rattled me. It was not great during the July tests but not sure I could get any lower. Combined with all of the other hormones being off, I think that I am still paying for the years of working nights, going to school, working out and high high amount of stress that I was under 7 years ago. I know that I had an adrenal crash then.

So what has happened is that the pregnenolone is shuttling everything to keep the adrenals and cortisol levels happy at the expense of all of my other hormones. Which means that no matter what I was trying to do to lose weight, nothing was working. All the working out I was doing to excess and under eating was stressing the adrenals even more, making the hormones imbalance even worse. I have to say that I do miss working out but right now, that is the LAST thing that my body needs is more internal stress.

My next step is to get a little bit more testing done on the GI tract to see what is going on with that and then I should have most of the puzzle pieces together to make a game plan to get me back to healthy.

I am still eating my BAB with lots of fat and protein until I am satisfied. I don’t eat again until I am truly hungry and then I eat more fat and protein. Sometimes that it not until 2 pm and then, if that is enough I really don’t eat dinner. Not counting calories or macronutrients since for me, it does not matter with the hormones being off. I am trying to eat carbs seasonally which means very very little. If it can’t grow where I live then no eating it, for the most part. So for the winter NO FRUITS at all!!! Just because I can buy them in the store does not mean I should be eating them due to where I live.

I am also in love with my cold baths. On the weekend I try to get in over 2 hours a day and the water as cold as I can get it and it is amazing. It just seems to be so calming to be in cold water and for anyone interested google cold thermogenesis.

I have been reading and learning a ton. I have come to realize that diet and exercise are only a small fraction of the puzzle of optimal health. That’s probably the reason why I have appeared a lot less on Spark, I just do not believe in the whole calories thing that is being sold anymore. It may work for some, but does not nor did it work for me.

So if you are not getting the results that you are looking for my dieting and exercise like mad it is something else.

WOUBBIE referred me to this blog, and I'm glad. It's nice to know there is someone else going through the exact same thing I am. I was starting to wonder.

Can you list the tests you had, if it's not terribly personal for you? I've had thyroid testing and am on synthroid now for that, but still no change at all. I gained for no apparent reason, after years of being thin and active. Now nothing I do takes it off. 1200 calories and 8 hrs/week in the gym had no affect. I've been low carb for years, so I went low carb/high fat, still no results. Grain free, nothing processed, no artificial sweeteners, no fruit, no alcohol of any kind, natural and homemade--this is my lifestyle, but no results. I'm just...stuck. My weight fluctuates up and down the same 5 lbs no matter how many calories, how much exercise, how little carbs or how much fat. I'm just stuck. It would be so helpful to me if you could let me know what other hormone testing you had so that I can request those from my doctor. Please feel free to send it to me by private message if you'd rather post it publicly. Thanks for even just sharing your experience; it's helped already just knowing there's someone else. Good luck with your own situation, and I hope everything resolves for you.

There are so many places that one can get tests from. Luckily, I have a GP that has been AWESOME about doing the tests that I want. I put together a list of what I want and why and he orders them all. The tests are not cheap!!!! My last set I was at 80%/20% with my insurance and with the clinic that I go through there is a HUGE discount. Almost $5000 of testing cost me just under $200. I am learning how to play the insurance game to maximize my benefits. A lot of the other tests I have to pay out of pocket but this year I have taken out the max in flex spending and will be using that. We also get $1000 up front from our insurance that I will be trying to use up. There are many on line testing companies that one can get tests kits from without a doctors note, Access Labs, Genova, Life Corp are just a few. Sign up to get their emails and watch for discounts.

Hmm...cold baths...? Talk to me about that when the summer muggies kick in! :-)

We are each our own unique experiment on what works or what doesn''s sticking with it and putting one foot ahead of the other that makes a difference for each of us.

Great to hear from you again!

Great to hear what you're up to! I so agree about the whole calorie thing. I am wanting to have hormones tested but am not sure what is the best method, since blood tests aren't always accurate and I don't have a doc that uses saliva tests right now. I'll have to fix that!

Fascinating. Are you doing the blood test through Life Extension? I just had to bug my doctor to prescribe testing for HBA1C, homocysteine and hs-CRP. The standard package didn't include those. Hormonal test would be a logical next step.

Very interesting on the pregnenolone. I have adrenal problems and can't lose weight either.
