Tuesday: 5.3k steady with clinic
Felt: Challenging but good
First clinic night! I went out with the 4:30 pace group and we kept it to an easy 6:45 pace. 6:45 wasn't as easy as I would have liked it to be, but I was able to complete the entire run without walk breaks. I haven't had a chance to run lately, but I've been weaving in other physical activity, so it felt good to be back.
Thursday: 4.9k Tempo with walk breaks, solo
Pace 6:15 running, 6:40 overall
Felt: Challenging, but still good
This was more of a mental victory for me. I had planned a 3-4k tempo run after work after doing the clinic run on Tuesday. That's about where I had left off before the move, and what we'd be starting at for a HM clinic. As I hit my turn-around point, I decided to run past it, because I need to be running the proper distances for the marathon training. It's still only two days into the 18 weeks, but I need to be giving it the effort it deserves - The goal was to hit the proper distance and intensity. I did compromise by doing 10 and 1s for this week because I needed the quick recovery walks in there, but doing the full 5k was what my willpower needed.
I know that if I hit the distances my fitness will be back where it needs to be in a couple weeks, but the important thing is getting my mind where it needs to be from the start. Five runs a week, cross training, strength, nutrition and all the little extras. As the weight drops off and I eat better and run more, the running will get easier - but there's no excuse for half-assing the effort part of it anymore.
There are things I physically need to build myself up to, but the motivation part of it isn't one of them. I have to be all in. I can't do the minimum and hope it gets better.
