My RIPPED class had 15 people in it on Monday - normally, it's a pretty big day when we get 8 in there - but we have lots of newbies showing up for the New Year. Last year, I admit I got a little impatient with losing my favorite spot in the room and maybe not getting my usual locker - waaah! What a baby! This year, I've decided to focus on being as welcoming as I can be. I remember all too well how awkward I felt when I showed up at my first Turbo class - WAY out of my comfort zone. The reception from the other long-timers was pretty cool, but the instructor was very welcoming, thankfully. I kept coming back and eventually felt much more confident - I'm so glad I stuck with it.
My chosen role this year is to try to exchange some kind of warm and welcoming words with at least one newbie each class. If that can make a difference in whether somebody sticks with a new workout routine or not, I want to make the effort. All it takes is a smile and a "That was killer - you really hung in there!" and I'll feel better, and hopefully the recipient will as well.
Hang in there, little newbies! Healthy habits are well worth the time - I hope you stick with it until you're a long-timer and can join my unofficial welcoming committee!
Wish me luck on my oral surgery tomorrow - can you tell I'm dreading it??
