Eye on the Basket (2014- Blog #28)

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Was watching the Blazers v. Denver game last week - great game! Our man LaMarcus was at the free throw line often! And here is what I noticed about this very very talented guy, who has probably shot thousands and thousands of balls from the free throw line in his life. There he was at the line.. and every single time, he focused. He focused on his delivery. He focused on the basket. He looked several times before delivering his shot. I'll bet he practices that shot over and over and over - no matter how good he gets.

Here's what I learned by watching him. No matter how "good you are" you always have to keep your eye on the basket. You can't waver or stop paying attention and still expect to make the basket. And.. when you miss, you just got up the next time with just as much focus.. right away!

I think that in our "healthy living journeys", we get complacent, over confident or lazy. We take our eye off the basket and still expect the same results as if we were focused. We stop practicing and expect the same results. We have to keep looking up. We have to keep checking. We have to recommit if we miss the target. We have to keep our eye on the goal.

Here's to keeping our eyes on the basket!

"Most of us are just about as happy as we make up our minds to be."

I have been really focusing this week. Been eating South Beach Gluten Free Plan phase I.
This week has reminded me how sloppy and unfocused I have been about eating.
Now, I am not obsessively weighing and measuring, but I am focusing on eating on plan foods. My "basket" involves really serious moderation in carbs/sugars/grains.

And you know what? Now that I am focusing, it is so easy. Easy. Easy. Easy to keep focused. Something has just clicked.
I must have an "off"/"on" switch mentality. But I need to get on and overcome that.

I've realized how unfocused I have been over the past year---where I struggled to maintain my weight. I did, but at 15-20 pounds above my goal. And it was hard.
Simply because I did not focus on the fundamentals---my basket needs to be low carb/grains/low sugars.

I have definitely taken my eye off the basket in both food and exercise category - weight remains fine, but healthy not so much...
emoticon for another great analogy - great for motivation!

I'm calling your mountain: Bob! Bob is a good name, a comfortable name, a name for substantial consistency. Bob it is. LOL

Now as to focus, one of my key words right now, I couldn't agree more.

I am reminded daily to stop mind wandering. Stop distracting myself from what is right before me that needs attention.

When I am entering and leaving a client's house (I'm a house cleaner by trade) especially in the weather we had today, I have to watch and focus on my feet and path taken into the house. Every house is different and therefore, I do have to continue to focus just simply to get into a person's house with my equipment. So far I've succeeded 100% of the time. Because I focused!

Great blog! I think you inspired me for tomorrow's blog. Appreciated!
