I just returned from a visit to my son and his family. This visit - as always - is filled with lots of activities with my grandkids, and not much control over meals.
However, I did manage to stay true to my commitment to eating within my calorie limits each day. How did I do that?
--One evening, after I had eaten enough all day long, I announced I was not having any dinner. I sat in the other room while the rest of the family sat to the table and ate.
--Another evening, when my husband wanted to go for Chinese food, I avoided the heavy sauces and the crispy fat-laden 'chips' altogether. I ordered the 'healthy selection' on the menu and had plain chicken with steamed vegetables.
--For three mornings in a row, our entire family went to our hotel breakfast buffet - with choices of pastries, eggs, fruit, breads, yogurt, granola, etc. I ate more than usual for breakfast on those days, but I watched and tracked my food carefully - and did not overdo it on any morning.
This visit was a first for me, where I put my eating agenda front and center for me.
Did I feel deprived? No. I felt triumphant.
I have come home this evening having had a wonderful time, and feeling full of energy.
