A Texas Snow Day

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Yesterday (Friday) was an unexpected day off from school, for both the kids and staff! Whenever we have frozen precipitation of any kind, everything pretty much closes down until the ice melts. Although most people in the nation laugh themselves silly at this, it actually is for the best, because no one here knows how to drive in/on ice, nor do we have the equipment to de-ice roads. Even on mornings when our windshields have ice, we don't have scrapers so we have always used whatever was handy...usually a credit card does the trick. Way back in the day, I used to use a plastic cassette tape box to scrape ice - it was pretty darn effective!

We did NOT have snow yesterday. Even as South Texas ice storms go, this one was pretty lame. But I DID enjoy sleeping in and hopefully, the make-up day will be President's Day (which was supposed to be staff development). I would much rather have students than sit in staff development!

It WAS nice to walk on the treadmill in the early part of the day when I had lots of energy (as opposed to after work when I'm already tired). No way can I get up early enough to walk in the mornings before school, though!

But I have had enough success on the treadmill lately that today I set my first exercise goal ever (as in, ever in my life). It is a baby goal, only to walk 4 miles per week...but I THINK I can do it. Physically, I can do it. The problem is mentally getting myself out there and actually DOING IT. Please - wish me luck.

I grew up in metro Detroit and was used to snow. When I moved down to Alabama, it struck me as strange that if cold precipitation was predicted, the businesses would all close early, everyone would stop at the store and buy out all the milk and bread, and then hole up. But, I did soon realize that they really didn't have the means or the know-how to deal with that. I'm back in Michigan now and absolutely HATE the winters.
