Adding in Strength Training

Friday, January 24, 2014

So one of my goals this year was adding in strength training. I started working with my personal trainer Katie once a week and I am really getting a great work out. My goal is to do strength training 3 days a week, so on the other days I attend a group weight class or I do weights a home.

2 things I am proud of so far:
1. Katie told me I am the only woman over 50 that she trains that can do a lunge - either they are too heavy or their knees are shot
2. She was impressed that I could hold a plank - I held it for over a minute and that is because I did the plank challenge back in November!

I am definitely working my muscles and can feel that I am increasing my strength. I really think this is going to help decrease my body fat, increase my lean muscle mass and hopefully speed up my metabolism. But bottom line, it is good for my health.

TGIF and here is a picture of my cat Stella and her idea of working out!

Way to go!!! I just started really doing strength training this month. I can already feel the difference. That picture of your cat looks like me today after holding my plank.
Keep up the good work and tell Katie that us old gals still can do it!

Well done, Noreen! Talk about following through with an intention...in a big way! I love that you set yourself up for success by signing on with a trainer. It must feel really good to have had her compliment you that way - way to go!

Stella looks really comfortable. Why is it that cats so often orient themselves so that their heads are pointed downhill? People seem to do just the opposite.

I have a picture almost exactly like that on my page of my cat Dory. He loves the treadmill for sleeping on.
I'm excited about your personal trainer, wish I could afford one. Sounds like you are doing great things. Isn't it wonderful when your strength is confirmed by someone else, especially someone professional like that. Way cool-you've got it going on!!

Woohoo!!! One minute plank! You go! I just added in some upper body weights at the Y to my workout, but at this point am trying to focus on getting some of my weight off so I can get better mobility and flexibility! Maybe lunges could be in my future! I can do squats, but not those doggone lunges! Hmmmm, new goal! Thanks for the inspiration! Stay warm this cold weekend! Enjoy! emoticon

Excellent! I love that you can do a plank for that long and that you did the challenge in Nov. Your cat Stella cracks me up, at least she isn't using it to hang up her fur! (clothes) and neither are you- far from it! I'm excited to read about your strength training since I've been avoiding it for years, yet know it would be a great health benefit. Awesome that you're going for it. emoticon

So awesome! Strength training is so important. Good for you! emoticon That is great about the planking too. I am so glad we did that challenge. I am actually thinking of repeating it next month. I love your kitty! Gorgeous! She looks just like my boy kitty! I will post a picture in my photos so you can see the resemblance. emoticon
