I had decided that this would be the year that I run outside during the winter season. Normally I would spend the winter indoors running on my treadmill. However, the display of my very old treadmill pooped out on me several months ago, so instead of spending money on a new treadmill, I decided that I would just run outdoors. As the weather started getting colder, I discovered that I actually run better when the temperatures are cooler. I bought some winter weather gear to keep me warm, and for the first part of November I happily ran outside.
Then....the polar vortex hit. And I just read that this is one of coldest winters we've had in U.S. history! Ugh, just my luck! I can count on one hand how many times I've been able to run outside in the last month or so. And when I do venture outside, I run into too many areas of snow, ice and slush that haven't been cleaned off of the roads and sidewalks. C'mon people - shovel, why don't you?
Anyway, I've been running on my 15-year-old treadmill. No, I don't know how fast I'm going or how far I'm running because the display still doesn't work, but I get out my watch and my running playlist on the iPod and I "guesstimate" how far and fast I run. I figure it's better than nothing. For the first time, I started fantasizing about a new treadmill.
This past weekend, my husband and I were in the mall and we walked past Sears and right there in the front of the store was a NordicTrack treadmill and IT WAS ON SALE, so my husband encouraged me to give it a try to see if I liked it. Of course, I did, so we ordered it. It is supposed to arrive sometime next week. I can't wait! If I can't run outdoors, then I feel like I can at least help get rid of the winter blues with a new treadmill that will help me train for a half-marathon until everything outside thaws out!
