Feet/Knee Pain & Weight Gain...??

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

I've never been heavier. Lately, my feet HURT. My knees too. Especially my right foot. It's not my ankles per se, but right where my foot connects to my lower leg bone has been hurting for a couple of weeks now. The arch of my foot hurts, the top of my foot hurts, and all the areas in between. At the end of the day, my foot/ankle just feels like it's broken. I'm assuming it's because of my excess weight. I have very nice, relatively new sneakers with good support that I wear during the day, so I honestly don't think it's my shoes. I've never felt anything like this before.

This may sound like a funny question, but do any of you experience foot pain because of weight gain? What do you do about it, OTHER THAN TRY TO LOSE WEIGHT. That in and of itself is kind of a Catch-22...it's harder to lose that weight when your feet/knees/back/etc is in pain.

I would appreciate any advice, suggestions, or personal testimonies.

Thanks so much for all the feedback. My heel really isn't what's bothering me, although the bottom of my foot/feet do hurt...if that makes sense. Imagine an invisible band connecting one ankle to the other, over the top of my foot. That part is what hurts -- on the sides and the top, when I flex and bend the foot especially. My foot also hurts on the bottom, in between the ball of my foot and my heel...but it doesn't feel like the arch itself is strained...just near that area. My right foot is what's giving me the most trouble. It kidn of hurts a little bit all the time, but at the end of the day is when it is at its most uncomfortable. Again, I do have new, supportive, and very comfortable sneakers that I wear all day. I put my feet up for a little while when I get home. I will try the frozen water bottle -- that's a good idea. My husband got me a bubbling foot bath for Christmas and BOY does that feel nice, too.

I have definitely relieved pain in my knees with just a 10lb weight loss, but my feet.... I am not sure my foot pain is weight related.

For arch pain, roll a soup can under the arch of your foot repeatedly. Is the arch most painful when you first wake up? If so, that sounds like plantar fasciitis. (sp?) I find that if I roll the can for a while a couple of times a day, some of the arch pain is relieved.

Good luck. Remember 90% of weight loss is handled in the kitchen. Only 10% is handled in the gym. I forget that myself a lot of times and have to get back to eating clean to see any changes on the scale.

Yes, I have experienced it and my solution to help lose the weight is to use our indoor pool at the fitness center and let the water make exercise less painful - as the weight came off, the pain diminished and while not completely gone, seriously reduced - the water really REALLY helps me.

I don't think at your weight (70-ish to lose?) you would have pain from the weight...but I have had similar pain from tearing tendons or ligaments in my foot...exactly the same pain you're describing.

Try some seated exercises for a while. Do you have access to a pool? That would relieve the pressure on your joints and might make it easier.
