6 Months of Maintenance

Saturday, January 18, 2014

I noticed that I had not blogged yet this year so I decided I should write one about how I feel now that I have been able to keep my weight off for the last 6 months.
What is interesting, is that losing and maintaining are so similar.
I still have to think about what and how much I am going to eat. Which after being on spark for 19 months now, is no longer really a thought, it is more of a way of life. It is just what I do.
I encouraged my husband to just try spark and if he didn't like it, then at least he tried it. After the first few weeks of being frustrated and not sure where everything was, he was hooked.
Then I saw the spark activity tracker, and I ordered one. I thought about keeping it, but I have a fitbit that I really like, so I gave it to my husband. Again, he kind of grumbled about it and said he didn't really want to use it, but I asked him to just try it for a month and see if he liked it.
Well guess what, he loved it. One day he went out and shoveled and did all kinds of work outside and when he came in, he was annoyed because he forgot to wear his tracker.
I told him that is a sure sign of being a sparker!
When people ask me how I lost the weight, I tell them about SP. When the ask me if I gave up different kinds of food, I tell them no. Not really. Just fast food and ordering pizza out.
I still eat pizza on occasion, but now it is thin crust and usually vegetarian or only one kind of meat. The simpler the better.
When I am down working out on the treadmill and have the TV on, I see all the fast food commercials and they don't even look good. The one time of day that it bothers me is right before I go to bed at night, because I am just a little hungry then. But the thought of eating that makes my arteries cry out for mercy!
It really is easier to cook to maintain now that my husband is doing this too because it makes both of us much more aware of the ingredients going into our food.
My husband is Greek and so we cook with olive oil frequently. He use to just pour as much olive oil as he wanted on the food he was cooking or the salad he was preparing.
Now that he has to track it, he measures it and it still tastes delicious with less on it.
For those that will are close and will be switching to maintenance soon, my advice is to still track and keep up with your exercise and continue to do pretty much everything you are doing to lose the weight. One is not different than the other, you just get a few more calories each day.
It is worth the time and effort to keep up the tracking!
Thanks for being with me on this journey, I have made so many wonderful friends and even though I have never met them in person, I know that you are all special to me anyway and someday I hope to meet many of you in person!
Keep up the great work and enjoy the journey!

Thanks for blogging about maintenance. It seems less scary now! :-)

Love the valentines roses background!

I eat pizza every week but as you say it is thin with no extra cheese! I still enjoy it as much as I used to, in fact I have it with loads of mushrooms and peppers so it is actually even more satisfying. I do love my veggies now!

And like your hubby, I love olive oil too, and it fits fine into my WeightWatchers diet. When I measure it out there is plenty. The extra I used to use was just a waste!

Thanks for commenting on my blog!

I love that you got your grumbling husband on board...lol. You reminded me that I need to start measuring my olive oil! I agree with you about continuing to track and do about the same thing in maintenance. It's went I stopped tracking and going on Spark that I gained it back:). Much better to stay on track!! Your blog is super funny:)

Great advice for maintaining. I have also found it's not that different from weight-loss mode.

That is good advice on keeping on tracking and exercise. It is a lifestyle and a habit we should get into and keep at it! I haven't given up on that since about a month after joining SP! I still have a ways to go, but seeing ones like you doing so well is very encouraging to me!
Good job on getting your husband to join in! I have been trying to get mine to join SP and wear a tracker of sorts for the longest time, but no luck. But, at least he walks and enjoys our outings together. He still needs to learn to stop so much of the snacking though on the weekends. Always a work in progress! emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Holly,
emoticon !!! I am so thrilled that you have had such success! Everyday you inspire so many of us to do and be better. You motivate us to work hard. You encourage us and cheer for us. You've shown us that there IS a light at the end of the tunnel if we are willing to work to get there. I feel so grateful that you are my friend. I am working to be where you are--and I can't wait to celebrate with you when I get there!!!

Holly, how great, six months of maintaining and going strong. It is amazing how hubbys get going with the program and make changes. My hubby didn't care so much about sticking with sparks, but because of it , I see him reading labels at the store and putting items back on the shelf----learned to figure out if something is or isn't a healthy choice at least. He does get in alot of exercise so that helps too.

Holly, so awesome that you have been able to maintain for six months! I totally agree, maintenance is pretty much the same - and you are right, it is because we have developed these habits as a lifestyle. We are accustomed to eating healthy nutritious foods and to exercise. I haven't been maintaining for as long as you have but I still weigh and measure my food. Maybe one day I will decide I can eyeball things okay but I still want that assurance that I am not going overboard.

And here's to another six months of successful maintenance!
