Those who are about to die...

Saturday, January 18, 2014

My daughter came for a visit right after Christmas, for 10 days. She is now speaking to me again, lol. There was a 6 week period where she wasn't because I was the cause of all the problems in her life...hard to make friends at the new school, problems with her dad, etc. She is 15 and therefore not amenable to reason.

In any case I am mostly forgiven now. We spent a few days doing nothing a"home" here in France and on New Year's Eve flew to Rome to start our vacation.

Yes, I got to party in the streets of Rome on New Year's Eve! Living in Europe does have a few advantages lol :

Piazza del Popolo (famous party area for NYE)

Colosseum ("decorated" for NYE)

On New Year's Day everything is basically closed so we just walked around a lot to see the main sites :

St. Peter's Square & Basilica

Live Nativity play

Trevi Fountain

Pantheon front & back

Colosseum :

Palatine Hill :

Circus Maximus :

On the 2nd we had...Gladiator Training! I found it through Viator, as one of the "insiders'" top 10 things to do. It is a 2 hour class on Gladiators. First you get the welcome & see a typical training arena, then spend some time in the small museum learning a brief history of Rome pertaining to the gladiators. We got to try on some gladiator helmets and handle the different weapons. Then we went back outside to don our tunics and learn how to fight with wooden swords.

At the end there was the "Those Who Are About To Die Salute You!" gladiator fights to crown the champion (I won!). Of course there were only the 2 of us and I had the "Mom" intimidation factor on my side but I still kicked major gluteus maximus if I do say so myself emoticon

The best NYE I ever had, I was in Rome. Danced with a hot guy all night. I love Rome, it's still one of my favorite cities in the world. Thanks for the pics.

Such beautiful pics and so great that you got to share the trip with DD. Daughters are HARD...I always said I'd take 20 boys before a girl! emoticon At least she has a feisty role model of a mother and that will serve her very, very well in her future!

I didn't much care for Rome...but we went to all of the touristy places and perhaps that was it. I much loved some of the smaller towns and outskirts.

I do have to say we dined at one of my most memorable restaurants there though...the steak florentine was to die for...still remember the taste! emoticon

Oh Wow! Living in Europe does have it's perks! What a wonderful New Year's Eve and day. Thanks for posting all those wonderful pics. Looks like there were a lot of people at the sites even though they were closed. I'll have to tell my girls about Gladiator training. They're 18 and 22 so I know about moody teenagers. It's caused by Horrormones! emoticon

How WONDERFUL! Glad your daughter has mostly "forgiven" you. Mine is 33 and we still seem to have a love/hate relationship. (At least on her side, I don't waste any effort "hating" her since she's married and 33 and lives across the country!!! LOL

wow the pictures are beautiful. have never been to France. always wanted a penpal from there. I have went to Munich Germany and Belarus though. I am glad your daughter has forgiven you. I was the same at age 15 years old towards my mom too but then dealing with my dads death, adjusting to a single parent home, moving all in one breath was hard.

    Beautiful pictures FFK!

(can you hear the envy?)

And commiseration and compassion offered for you with the 15 year old. Have exactly the same situation here. I'm to blame for everything (sigh...)

My mantra is: This too shall pass (and if it doesn't there's always therapy.)
