Schizophrenic scale for the win, lose or draw?

Thursday, January 16, 2014

I started the year on a semblance of a blog roll, 3 out of 4 days with some sort of entry, but then squat for nearly two weeks. Far cry from the blog a day streak I kept up for three months from late 2012 to 2013. Not sure why the difference. Certainly not a lack of random thinks rolling through the skullspace, as those flow on unabated. Might be laziness, that old bugaboo that has wrought so much damage. Might just be I donít wanna talk to you, but thatís belied by the fact I keep wandering over to this space. Heck if I know.

What I do know is that my bathroom scale has a rather scattered personality. One day it will be kind, one day it will be a beast. And yes, I know, sodium and water and (umm, some other stuff), Oh My! But there really doesnít seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the ups or downs occur. So in fact, I have only a ballpark idea of whether to trust the scale on any given weigh in occasion. The BLC 24 round started Wednesday, and I weighed in at 195.0 to start, which was a pound lower than I weighed myself on Tuesday, which was a day I thought I was being bad. Similarly, there have been unexplained gains after healthy eating days. Now, I'm well aware that day to day, and even every few hours, weight does shift, making the daily weigh in obsession kind of silly. But tehre really does seem to be some sort of randomnosity going on with my scale. Might to have to dig in the basement to find an old analog scale, for a non-technlogical solution.

I went out Wednesday night to check out the local bar trivia game. Went to an Applebees, which had 13 teams competing, and darnit, I shoulda won, but I didnít have the bollocks to back up my final round answer, which I knew to be correct. That $30 Applebees gift card should have been mine. But for the sake of the diet and weight, maybe just as well I wussed out in the end. Iíll just have to be happy knowing that I beat everyone else, all by my lonesome through the end of the regular rounds. Yep, thereís a lot of useless info rattling around my dome. Iíll have to put out feelers to see if anyone else around here is interested/available in playing on a weekly basis.

Oh, and there was one other bit of news from the past couple of weeks Ė I scored a short contract to do remote work for an organization down in Texas. I get to go down to the Austin area next week for an introduction (I suspect the barbecue down there wonít be good for the weight thing, but oh well, it must be partaken in), and then itís 7 weeks of working from home. Never having really worked from home consistently before, Iím curious how that will work. The commute, at least, is gonna be fantastic. How can you beat rolling out of bed and being there? I suppose I oughta clean out my desk to make it into a proper working environment.

Looking forward to the trip down to Austin for another couple of reasons, besides the barbecue. Thereís someone down there Iíve been chatting with on line for 18 or 19 years that lives in the area, who just happened to get engaged this Christmas. Looking forward to meeting him, and congratulating him in person. Also, thereís another guy that I spent a considerable amount of time on-line gaming with in 2010-2011 in the area. Itíll be nice to say hi, grab a drink and reminisce. And, of course, thereís the whole, hey, I can honestly claim to be employed again! aspect, that Iím certainly not overlooking.

Not a horrible first couple weeks of the year, all told.

My scale is cursed with the same affliction. It doesn't know what it wants to do. I, however, know exactly what I want to do... smash the wretched thing. But alas, then I would have to buy a replacement that would probably be no kinder, so I refrain.

Congrats on the job, that's awesome! And enjoy your trip to Austin and meeting your friends!
