Get RID of MATH!! Not! (2014 - Blog #13)

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

emoticonPROCLAMATION: "Math does not Work! Let's rid ourselves of math!"

emoticon "Based on what?" you might ask.

emoticon "Well, Johnny, the awesome kid in Mr. B's class, failed the math test - again!! Great kid! And he failed the math test. Therefore, MATH DOES NOT WORK. We just should not do math anymore. It is really a waste of time."

emoticonAnd you might (rightly) say, "YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING!? Just because the cute kid failed the math does NOT mean that MATH is a failure! And.. don't you dare say then that Johnny is a failure!"

emoticonYou go on to firmly add, "Hey, you can't blame MATH for this failure. It is NOT," you would loudly tell me, " ...that MATH failed. The student failed for a variety of reasons, but there is no way that we should decide that we should just not have anyone do math anymore base on the fact that the kid failed a math test."

emoticon"Hmmm, you might be right. Maybe we need to figure out HOW TO SUPPORT Johnny rather flatly proclaim that we ought to throw out math."

emoticon Here's the deal... We do this with our efforts with our diets. As Mr. Mental Toughness points out- it is not the diets that fail. It is we the dieters who fail the diets.

I think it is important that rather than toss out all diets (I prefer lifestyle), we should figure out how to SUPPORT OURSELVES. Rather than beat up on ourselves for "failing" a diet (math test), we should consider each failure as part of the learning process. Rather than throw our hands up in defeat, we should figure out what we need to do next in order to do better next time. And.. rather than equate failures on our diets as personal failures, we need to celebrate that fact that we care enough to try.

emoticon It is time to STOP saying MATH is a failure.
emoticon It is time to proclaim that we are ALWAYS LEARNING!
