How do you handle going out on dates?

Saturday, January 11, 2014

If today was any other day I would have done great! I am in my calorie range and got a bit of exercise in! But instead it's Saturday and instead of staying in studying I'm going out for drinks and dancing with the bf. I put some drinks into my calorie counter so at least they're accounted for but I will still be over for the day.

I'm not sure how to handle days like today... We're meeting at a pub for some apps and drinks and then heading to a club for dancing and some drinks. I don't want to skip meals and starve myself in during the day to be able go out but I also want to be able to go out and have fun too.

How do you guys deal with these types of things?

I guess I do tend to not eat much during the day and maybe that isn't ideal, but it's what I have to do. I'll eat and drink whether I had breakfast and lunch, or not.

Honestly, I feel like this time around, I'm not going to be too strict on myself on date nights, which we don't really have that often. We live in a small town and we prefer our own food and we work a ton and never feel like going out. But we will have evenings of pure gluttony.

I think this time, I'm going to do a few things differently:
1) try to find out in advance what is on the menu - happy hour, dinner, whatever...choose what I want in advance
2) try to order something healthy in addition to something fun - like a small side salad to stay occupied instead of dipping in to the amazing parmesan garlic fries, lol!
3) log it all even if you go over on calories...stay accountable. The idea that we will never have crazy calorie days is ludicrous. But I just think that with time, it'll get easier and you'll find yourself not wanting to eat as much and choosing healthier options. Most importantly, remember that giving your entire life over to a diet sucks. Do your best on date nights, but if you go over, so be it. Just make sure it is for something delicious :)

Those are my thoughts...maybe not the most SP-friendly, but I've spent years obsessing and swearing foods off and beating myself up over a bad day...

There are a couple of things that you could do in this scenario. There's always the alternate the drinks with water trick, where you have a drink, then have a water, have a drink, have a water. Then you're not drinking as much overall.

There are also the Skinny Girl brand of cocktails that are lower in calories. So that's an option.

Re: the apps, see if you can order shrimp cocktail as one of the apps, or express a preference for ones that you know are lower in calories and then stay near those so as you munch you're not undoing all of the progress that you had today.

And lastly, if you spend all of your time on the dance floor, then you're getting in exercise and you can't eat or drink. :)
