Day 5 - I am 9 pounds down on green juice fast

I am incredibly grateful to be 9 pounds down in weight on Day 5 of my green juice fast. This is on record as being one of my best weight losses thus far for juice fasting, and I very much hope it continues like this. I do know that the weight loss will slow down, especially after Day 14. According to experts.

Saying goodbye to the holiday pounds is a good feeling. I have had a rule about getting off those holiday pounds right away in the new year. My knees especially are grateful for this reprieve, although my lower back continues to ache a bit

Last night I was out in a cold rain to exchange three shopping bags full of regular kale for organic kale instead. My husband had picked up the wrong kind by mistake. I find that the organic dino kale juices best for me, although I have used the curly green kale from time to time. I always hear that the darkest leafy greens have the most nutritional punch and that is what I need.

Also I learned the hard way that it is so important to have organic produce. I tried to do a 21-day detox at a place with very little organic kale and other produce. Even when I could get organic, there wasn't enough of it and it was sky high. While I did lose weight and get many other benefits from what turned into a 21-day reboot, I know that detoxing on organic produce is WAY better. For one thing, I don't want to be "mainlining" pesticides into my system. Green juice hits the system with 15 minutes, giving a major nutritional boost. That is one reason why I like it.

So it was a relief to get organic produce even though I had to run out into the rain and pay more for it. it was worth it. Not only that, the grocery store had just restocked the shelves so I got the freshest organic dinosaur kale available.

Today I made my husband a very dark green juice, and I am hoping he will have at least one per day. With the exception of fish, he eats vegetarian and mostly vegan when at home. That is a big help for me. So many people have asked me what I do about cooking for my husband. The answer is that I don't. My husband had his own favorite recipes. And we don't have meat in our humble abode so I actually don't even remember any more how to cook it.

On Day 5, I feel more energetic than yesterday. I still have some sinus drainage and definitely think the coconut oil pulling I just did has something to do with that.

Today is a day for more Kundalini yoga from dvd and some decluttering. It is also a rainy day that supposedly will get up to a balmy 57 degrees. Just before the temperatures drop again. Apparently it will be about 35 degrees next weekend.

Day 5 is still part of major detox mode for most people. It is a rainy, sleepy Saturday and I am sure I will need to take it easy today still. Each day I feel better and better, though, and I am so glad to be on this green juice fast. I am truly grateful.

Note: The most visible change is that my face is thinner and that my skin is clearer.

Cherie Calbom's books on juicing are great. She is a nutritionist with her own website and recipes. Here is one I have tried, but all her recipes are likely great:

There are many great recipes online. In the end, you are going to want to experiment with your own juice and smoothie recipes. Get creative and have fun with it!

Shay's Reboot has posted numerous versions of the Mean Green juice. The first one listed here is the official one used by Joe Cross and Phil Staples. Here is are those first two Mean Green Recipes (link above):

6 Kale Leaves
1 Cucumber
4 Celery Stalks
2 Green Apples
1/2 Lemon
1 piece of ginger
Mean Green Juice #2

handful spinach
3 stalks of kale
2 golden delicious apples
small handful parsley
1 lemon
1 cucumber

Cherie Calbom's Happy Morning Mood juice contains the following ingredients (link above):

4-5 carrots, well scrubbed, green tops removed, ends trimmed

3 fennel stalks; include leaves and flowers

1/2 cucumber

1/2 green apple

Handful spinach

1-inch piece ginger root

Kris Carr's Make Juice No War green drink contains the following ingredients (link above):

2 large cucumbers (peeled if not organic)
Big fistful of kale
Big fistful of sweet pea sprouts
4 5 stalks celery
1 2 big broccoli stems
1 pear or green apple (optional)
1-inch piece of ginger (or less)
Other optional greens we love: romaine, parsley, spinach and dandelion.


Here are the ingredients:

1 bunch of dandelion greens
bunch celery
bunch cilantro
1 cucumber with ends removed
1 lemon with peel removed
2 inches of fresh ginger root

I promise to start posting some of my own recipes. Right now, I mostly juice Mean Green #1 without lemon (due to dental sensitivity) and ginger fire which is my very own carrot juice with as much ginger as I can possibly stand. I also love the dandelion detox and have my own version now.

The best juice recipes are your very own. Get creative!

    You are doing great! My weight loss didn't really slow down until after 45 days and a little every day. Every one is different. I also need to do fruit juicing along with my green juices. I need to keep my carbs up. Works for me!
