The january effect...

Saturday, January 11, 2014

I have been swimming in the morning most saturdays since november - it is only for people over eighteen and vary calm and meditative. They open at 8.15 and I usually swim an hour.

Saturday before new years eve I was alone in the water for half an hour, then two people more came - it was comfortable not to be bothered by spashing or others swimming slower ( I am a slow swimmer myesl but there are even slower)

The week after I had to smile whan I arrived at the indorr pool - lots and lots of cars in the parkinglot. And lots of people in the pool as weel, during the time I swam we were 20 persons for I while, then it is a little crowded and one has to be apprehensive to be able to keep a steady ryttm. I thought it was rather funny because this is typical january and I know that when february comes it will be back as usual.

Wrong - it is ALREADY back as usual... this morning we were the "normal" bunch which is about 6-8 poeple swimming at the same time (the saturday before newyears eve was extraordinary slow)

What - new years resolutions only lastin ten days or so? I usually stick with them at least for a month... and I canīt help wondering if they bought annual memberships to save money...

As for me I know that I need somethin new. I have this doctors appointment monday and I have my swedish supportgroup and we started a new period week before new-year. But it is not enough to inspire me. I need more help to get the energy to keep on.

Daughter is here this weekend, we are going to the theatre tonight with my sister and I am really looking forward to it. It started snowing this morning and I can exercise some by shoveling for a while... not desperately needed but could be a goog thing to do if it continues to snow later, for now it is about 3 cm only.

Daugther got to use the Wii Just dance - and I joined. It was fun. I will try to reach 2000 minutes of exercise this month with the help of wii that is doable.

Honestly, I didn't actually make any New Year's resolutions this year, because I set some goals last year in August that just rolled over to this year. And I signed up for a rowing class in November - why wait 'til January? My daughter and I also have talked about Zumba - she wants to do more cardio but hates running, so I suggested dance. I might pick up a Just Dance for our Wii, sounds like fun!

Yes, it's true. As I commented in my status line last week, we see a LOT more joggers in the first week of January. And now it is more quiet again. So this shows how hard it is for many people to stick to a resolution!
When I was riding my bike in between all those joggers I felt like they'd look at me and think **I** too had just started... but I've been taking bike rides almost daily for two years now. I felt I needed a badge to prove that! LOL

There were 32 people at my zumba class this week, some regulars, but January Joiners may become March marchers! So be patient!

Glad you enjoy your swimming

That is an awful lot of fitness minutes this month emoticon emoticon emoticon

I finally gave up on gyms when I paid for a membership (a small extra fee to be able to go to two locations- one RIGHT ON the way home from work) and didn't go to the gym once for over a year. Now I have to earn my way to a membership, if I really want one AFTER I do regular exercise on my own. When I do 6 months of weekdays vigorous workouts (I have tons on short workouts in a book and tons of videos) of 14 minutes, I'll consider whether I want a membership.

However, I can understand liking access to a pool, though I used the gym pool only during hot weather! I can also understand wanting a place inside to work out when you live in a cold climate. I don't take near enough advantage of SoCal weather. Spoiled rotten!

Of course, the January effect is a boon for you! Gyms probably couldn't afford to stay open on the money paid by those who use them.

You are absolutely right about the January effect; it's universal! For some people the financial investment is a motivator but then that wanes too.
I think you have to focus on why your are pursuing a healthier life in the first place.

My motivation this time was not weight loss and fitness. It was fear. Fear of Alzeheimer's and what it would do not only to me but to the rest of my family. The choices I make are heart healthy, heart healthy is brain healthy and the weight loss and fitness area a bonus. There are no guarantees but I hope to at least delay it as long as possible. We lost my Mom in her mid 60's, she passed on at 86. I'm now losing my sister who is 80. Still at home with her husband but not able to live independently any longer. She's been declining 10+ years now. A terrible disease that affects everyone it touches. My children have families of their own to take care; I'm doing my best to not add to those challenges but to be a support. So far so good.
In addition, I hate taking meds and I hate going to the doctor. So, staying healthy is important to me and I DO feel it's my responsibility. Old age is a challenge all it's own.

That said. Life is good and I'm headed out for a trail walk soon. Sun is out and the temperature has warmed up some. Enjoy your weekend!

Happy Saturday MeddyPeddy! Your blog made me smile emoticon I am big gym person (I enjoy lifting weights). I wanted to start my year off right with a new gym. I joined the new gym and went maybe three times....then I came down with this terrible cold that I hope is not turning into an infection. So I appear to be (and I guess I am for now) one of those people that join the gym and only show for the first 8 days (though I too thought the timeframe was about three weeks). They usually come back the first few warm days of spring. Have fun tonight with your daughter!
