I'm always looking for ways to expand our consignment gallery biz...and this one is GREAT!

Thursday, January 09, 2014

emoticon Light bulb moment!

How do I differentiate myself from the other 9 million competing consignment shoppes.

Find a niche! emoticon

Everyone likes the idea of turning an old family heirloom piece of furniture into something trendy and more enjoyable.

emoticon But...OH..the hassle of sanding off old finishes and elbow greasing around tight spaces...too much time and TOO much trouble. I'll just donate the piece you say..it just doesn't fit with my decor. Sorry Grandma Ruthie.

NO MORE...now we have this absolutely MARVELOUS new vehicle to paint up the ugly into the beautiful with NO prep! WHAT...no prep? You heard me right...it's called chalk paint and it will literally stick to glass with no prep. As long as the item is clean and dry you can chalk paint it into beauteous perfection.

I first fell in love with Annie Sloan Chalk paint. She's out of the UK but does have distributers here in the states. I applied. I was turned down...I guess a consignment gallery is not toney enough for the Brits. Weird that they have a distributor who is a consignment shoppe doing it up in Ft. Myers.....maybe that isn't working out so well so they have decided not to add more.

I say...THEIR LOSS! emoticon emoticon I would have made a MOST excellent retailer...but I was a little questionable myself when I heard that they charge you $400 for the training alone. Come on people...if you are getting people to sell your product for you at least cut them some slack on training them. emoticon

I kept researching and found CeCe Caldwell Chalk paint. I bought some and was impressed!

Good bye Annie hello CeCe! emoticon

I will now become an official CeCe Caldwell Paint Retailer and I plan on selling the paints and conducting classes on how easy it is to go from UG to Beautiful in one short workshop. We are talking furniture here boys and girls...although some days I wish it worked on bodies too!

Even more exciting is that our best friends who owned a glass and mirror biz sold it to their daughter and after years of being off the beaten track with the business has decided to come front and center to the busy strip center that we are in!

She will be our new neighbor and she is a crafty, crafty girl. I'm considering asking her if she wants to join me on the CeCe end of my biz. I may be able to rent some space from her new unit and together we could do the paints and classes. There's nothing like a fresh smart girl to share the spoils with and she is a painting wizard. It's all big excitement and I haven't even approached her yet with the concept but knowing that she's a smart biz woman I have a feeling if she isn't too overwhelmed with the glass end of the biz she will see great opportunity here. And since our spaces are so compatible with each other it would add to both of our business success.

I'm very excited. I really think 2014 is the year of expansion but I can't do it all myself and I'm more than willing to share my knowledge and experience. It could be a wonderful new adventure.

I'm doing well on my eating and good on my exercise. One more birthday celebration that will happen next week then I'm going to try a 28 day program that is supposed to spark your metabolism. I don't want to cheat one iota so I'm waiting until I know I can do it justice.

I am seriously so pooped tonight I can hardly type...we received the gorgeous marble dining set with the raw silk chairs...sooooo beautiful! AND the custom stainless steel set that was handcrafted by a Taos artisian. It truly IS a Found Objekt worthy of the gallery name.

A fantastic indoor/outdoor wicker dining set that I have a list of 5 people waiting for a price on.

I conducted biz out of bed this morning on my I-Phone...these modern contraptions are so awesome...but they just allow you to work longer hours..maybe not so great in the scheme of things.

Stay sparky my friends...God is GOOD! emoticon emoticon

I agree - there is something less than savory about having to pay for the privilege of selling somebody else's stuff. Sounds like you've made a good discovery, an intelligent decision, and are well on your way to expanding and helping somebody else in the bargain. You know what they say about when a door closes, a window opens? Good thing you noticed that open window! Keep on keeping on!

You continue to amaze me, my crafty friend! I can just see you sprucing up furniture with chalk paint....maybe having a demo model that is painted on only half a piece just to show the difference. My energy levels are very low right now with chemo, but I love looking at the crafty things you have done and getting ideas from you for when my energy levels come back.

I can just hear the excitement in your blog as you describe this paint and all the other good things happening at your gallery.

I'm glad you have a lot of other things to be thinking about beside you home fight. You are one special lady!

Love,
Kay

I'll have to look into this chalk paint - never heard of it. I have been doing furniture for years - sort of Mackenzie-Childs knock-offs - but it does require lots of chemicals and sanding and *work*.

Let me know how it turns out - show us some examples if you have them?
