Plagiarism, or How To Make A © for MAC &/or PC

Thursday, January 09, 2014

A friend just wrote to me that someone lifted her blog, changed 2 sentences and got a best blog award. I sent her a metal water bottle goodie and this note;

Gentle Reader,

When freezing water for that next big race, fill your metal bottle half-full or half-empty, depending on how well your meds are working, and lay it on it's side inside of the freezer. That will keep the bottom of the bottle from bowing out as the water freezes over night, which is how long you might leave the bottle in the freezer.

Should another Sparkie steal your blog, go up side their head with your properly frozen water bottle.... and remember, always use the © copyright symbol when blogging. (On a MAC, press option + g) ("To create the Copyright symbol © on a PC: hold down the Alt key and, using the numeric pad on the far right of your keyboard [the one you never use] key in the numerics 0169 - Try it!") That may at least make the potential purloinista understand that they are committing plagiarism, which is a civil crime, (just like aggravated assault) not only against the fundamental beauty of Spark People, but a crime against oneself and society as a whole. And, as if that were not enough, people who steal blogs cannot possibly keep the weight off because the low self-esteem involved comes back and undermines their progress.

Plagiarism - hmmmm - sounds like a good subject for a blog. I think maybe folks who join every team available do so that their blogs will reach more peeps.

Love,

Curtiosity ©

P.S. I do not really advocate violent retaliation - for anything. I was raised on Wile E. Coyote and am still enamored of and amused by his flawed M.O. ©©©©©XoXoXoXoX

It's too bad, but there are people like that in this world, and I guess there are bound to be some here. I personally would like to see the person identified so everyone would know what they did, but I've worked in the justice system too long.

On a Mac:

*
simply enter Option + G

The alt key on a MAC says "alt" in the upper left hand corner and the word "option" across the bottom of the key. The option key is located between the "control" and command" keys on either side of the space bar on the edge of the keyboard closest to your navel. Hold the option key down while typing the letter g - it is actually quite thrilling.

Bad move on the part of the person who did it because now they know what a terrible thing they have done and how many people are now aware of it on SP. I, for one, will be putting the copyright symbol on my blogs from now on although I can't see any reason why anyone would want to use any of my blogs.

Well, that's pretty crappy. What is the 'best blog' award, anyway? Never mind, don't wanna know. My first reaction is: wha?? Love your method of fixing the issue, and this line made my day: 'fill your metal bottle half-full or half-empty, depending on how well your meds are working'. My sympathies to whoever got their blog stolen and I'll shake a hypothetical fist at the thief. Sheesh.

I learned the word and meaning in early elementary school. We were to turn in a report on a topic that we drew from a fish bowl. Mine was disease. Wondering with the Law of Attraction if this was the beginning of my roller coaster ride of long-term health issues. I digress. I excitedly looked through my grandparents OLD encyclopedias and came up with Beri-Beri, sharpened my No. 2 pencil, dutifully copied verbatum in my best printing, and proudly turned in the paper the next morning. After lunch came the explanation and lecture (privately, thank you Miss Mutscher).

I think this has been going on (consciously and unconsciously) since the beginning of written communication.

PHOENIX1949 (imagine an encircled c here; could not get to work on my PC)

Like you, I do not promote violent retaliation. Like Mr. Coyote, however, I'm all in favor of a little hands-off manipulation of circumstances, such as placing a false "Detour" sign in the roadway so that I may see the plagiarists go over the cliff. One thing I get nuts about is someone stealing my words and it's happened many times.

May I ask a favor despite our being strangers? Would you mind responding here in your blog or via SPmail what do you mean by pressing "option?" There have been a couple of occasions when I wanted the copyright symbol, but my lack of computer skill thwarted me.

If you have to copy someone's blog, it shows just how little you are able to think for yourself. Boo! Hiss!

    Horrible!

Can this be reported to SP? This is clearly in violation of the rules, and this individual is certainly an undesirable part of this community.

What kind of "person" steals a blog. That doesn't even make sense to me. I like your way of dealing with it. My kind of solution
