Hiked New Trail at Smith Rock

Monday, January 06, 2014

After just one week of eating healthy (after the holiday indulgences), I can already see an improvement in my skin (I tend to get eczema or psoriasis when I eat too much sugar). I am enjoying eating right and exercising.

Yesterday I hiked a new trail with friends, the hike included a hard new uphill trail in Smith Rock State Park. It was a lovely cold clear day.

Friend and me in all our winter layers

We hiked down into the canyon, and hiked along the river. We saw great blue heron, ducks and geese, and LOTS of rock climbers.

Crooked River

About 2 miles into the walk, Monkey Face came into view. We couldnít see any climbers this time; some days they are huddled into the giant monkey mouth, or dangling from the face like a bean sprout or spaghetti strand.

The new trail went up to a lovely viewpoint. We stopped there for lunch.
Unfortunately I didnít realize that the trail then went up and UP and UP. It was a good workout! We reached the top of the new Summit trail, and then headed down Burma Road.

Descending Burma Road. (not sure if you can the climber clinging to the rock wall)

The final descent was quite steep and challenging. I loaned my hiking pole to my friend who was struggling with the descent (she has an injured hip)

View from the bottom of the loop. I can't believe we were up among the spires!

We hiked back along the final section of the river. Then we had to do MORE uphill to get back to the car. By then I was ready to take an elevator up the hill -- but no alas no elevator was available! All in all a lovely day and a beautiful (and challenging) hike

I can't reach Terried10's page, so I will just reply here -- Smith Rock State Park is in Oregon, in the central (dry) part of the state!
