New year..new enthusiasm..new plans to lose.

Happy New Year to all who may venture to my blog site. And of course to all of the team members with whom I have been blessed to have gotten to know and love. And to Spark People, in all other teams.
I imagine many of you watched the Rose Parade yesterday. Some controversy, which I won't touch on, but the beauty and creativeness that wend into the floats is amazing. I loved the bands too, was surprised to see one from one of the small cities we lived in for a bit.
The parade, brought back many memories. We lived in two rentals that were where the parade begins, plus my husband taught Italian and ran the radio studio at a small college right at the start. They had bleachers we could sit and watch the parade, which was so nice. At on residence I was not that happy to be so close, as people came ALL night long, down our street on their way up to get a good place to stand I guess, or were just carousing around. Of course they were noisy. We would go up early to see the horses and floats up close The other home was to be demolished for a freeway on ramp. It was old and big, but had a tremendous gravity heating system, it heated the house within minutes. I was able to purchase two beds (had high posts) and a dressing table (they were antique) from the elderly lady (hey that is what they call me now!!) she was very sweet and thought my girls would love that table.
That home was several blocks from the parade start, and at the top of a small hill where Colorado st. went down to the Rose Bowl. So many parked down there and walked up for the parade. Our girls made money selling donuts and sweet cakes to those coming by. Made a few bucks. Our son rented our driveway to several, so he made something too.
One the walk up from the bowl area, a couple came to our door, the woman was desperate for a bathroom. Normally I would not just let anyone in my home but she and her husband just looked nice!! I got a letter from her after they got home, (they were from another state) thanking me for letting her in. She offered to take us in if we were ever in her area. It is nice when you know your deed was appreciated.
OK, I am almost through. I just wanted to add this tid bit. Before my husband worked for the college he was at RCA as a tech (he started out putting antennas up which scared me silly. emoticon Some rich peoples homes had high peeked roofs, and he had to climb up with a 20 ft. pole and antenna to install it. ALRIGHT I am not as close as I thought, this came to mind and I thought it funny. He was hooking up wires in a movie star's home when suddenly she ran down the hall naked as a jay bird emoticon (who said they were naked) surely she could have used a towel. But then we would have no story.
NOW, the end is near. He was sent to NJ to teach the techs there how to fix a color TV, not sure they were out yet but they had to be ready. I wish I remembered the date, but all the tech's families were invited to the Hollywood location of RCA, to see the first broadcast of the Rose parade in color. My were we impressed! Now people have hugs TVs to see it but it was just a little 10-12" TV
Now those who got this far can go rest your eyes. Just had to share memories of other New Years.
Hope it is nice and sunny where you are, well maybe with some snow too. Here's to a new us, or to staying at your goal! Lots of hugs, and God's blessings, Betty emoticon

I remember going to see the floats after the parade. I was a very little girl then, but it was fun.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us.

Dear Betty, loved your memories of the Rose Bowl parade. Reminds me of those proud days when the Rose Bowl was reserved for the champions of of the Big Ten and the Pacific Eight, and Ohio State represented the Big Ten. We would watch the parade on my grandparents' color television. They had one of the few in town, and the only one in our family. I particularly remember one time when the announcer said, "and those horses really are really black-and-white, so those of you with color TV's don't need to adjust your sets."

Thank you so much for your memories. And for your welcome to the Spark-o-sphere. :-) I look forward to a full year of friendship with you. And your quest for the bonus points wheel.

Oh Betty I love this blog! Thanks for the great stories, you had me thinking and laughing both. The "nekked" movie star cracked me up, we know how unpredictable those stars can be emoticon Your husband must have been a great guy, well he had a great girl too (you) I can just see you chewing your fingernails while he's up on roof tops! emoticon I didn't watch any of the parade but bet it was nice. Take care and Happy New Year sweet lady. emoticon
