I've never been the type to make New Year resolutions. This is because I've always felt that no one ever keeps them. I don't see the point of making a promise to myself that I don't even intend to keep. Beyond that, I've found that writing out SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals is far more effective than any New Year resolution.
That said, if you had told me, exactly one year ago, that New Year's Day 2014 would find me nearly 80 pounds lighter, I would have had a very difficult time believing you. I would have been incredulous if you told me I'd weigh what I currently weigh, and be wearing a size 8 (in pants & skirts - thanks to my bust line, dresses need to be a tad bigger). I never wore a size lower than a 10 in my life, even when I weighed 130 at age 16 (admittedly, I liked my clothes a bit more loose back then, however).
I'm thoroughly amazed at the progress I have made, and intend to be at my goal weight by the time the next New Year's Eve rolls around... and that feels pretty darn good!
