I heard the bells on Christmas Day....

Wednesday, December 25, 2013

When you’re happy, sing. When you’re sad, sing even louder.
--Irish Proverb

Holy Holly, Greg Turiya Liotta

I've always felt that if I can keep a song in my heart, it will add joy to my day. And so I decided to share some of my favorite music of this time of year...perhaps you too will find joy in it!

John Schofield & the Wild Magnolias

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Christmas 1863

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said:
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!"

I had never read the Longfellow, only knew the carol made from it.
Thanks, I will need to find more now, I assume he was anguishing over the Civil War?
Also thanks for sharing the music choices.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year.
