Holiday Sugar Exposed!

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

I've been gaining weight over the past few weeks that I've been neglecting to Spark, and looking at the amount of sugar I'm consuming each day, it's not hard to see why. Here's a quick synopsis of my daily sugar intake:

Breakfast:
mini coke (7.5oz) 25g
dark choc stars (Tj's) 1 cookie 2.75g
banana 0g (I'm only counting added sugars)

Lunch:
coke (12oz) 39g
dark choc stars 2 cookies 5.5g
bread 2 slices 2g
roasted red peppers (jar) 1.67g
tuna salad 0g

Pre-Dinner SUBTOTAL:
75.92g
Daily Goal: 25g
= 3 times my goal!
= AAAAAACK!

What went wrong? I stopped tracking my daily nutrition on Spark, so I stopped reading labels (until now), and hence made some not-so-great choices about what to eat and drink. I know that if I had once stopped to compare the sugar content of even a mini can of soda (7.5oz) to my daily goal, I would have put the sugary soda back on the shelf!

So cheers to starting over, and making better choices this time around. Happy Holidays.

L'chaim!

It's interesting how *drinking* our calories doesn't seem to have the same impact as eating them in terms of how we feel...that's for me, anyway. It's easy for me to pop a can of coke or have a Strawberries and Creme at Startbucks and not even THINK about what a huge chunk of my calories those drinks take up. I'll sit and drink a whole bottle of soda and at the end of the day, I still feel fine. I don't feel full or bloated. But those calories are still there. Ok, I don't know if that made any sense. It's so easy to down sugar and calories in drinks!
