Last night I figured it would be a good idea to bake the pies - two pumpkin for the family, plus the apple pie I had promised to my young student-friend. I hadn't been able to make it for him last week for his birthday because I came down with some tummy bug. So, I told him I "owed" him. Anyway, last night I made the crusts, then prepared the pumpkin filling first - in the process discovering I was using up the last of the sugar, both white AND brown - had J U S T E N O U G H for the pumpkin and apple pie fillings. But none for the morning's coffee! Well...did up all three pies, beautiful (of course!)
I had to drive my son in to work this morning so I stopped at Wegman's on the way home and got more sugar (white and brown) - AND a few other things. Vanilla and almond extract, flour, potty paper...I had to add it up carefully in my mind, knowing I had limited funds in my account (it's a few days before payday!) So I had sugar for my coffee, and enjoyed a piece of pumpkin pie for breakfast.
Last night Abi (Glitterfairy77) started the greens in the crockpot, and their aroma has been whetting our appetites all night long...After breakfast, I started cooking the gallon-bag of butternut squash cubes I'd prepped a while ago and frozen. As I type, they are just about done, having simmered to cook down, with a bit of cinnamon, allspice, brown sugar, and butter.
We haven't made any Christmas cookies, but I figure we have yet another week and a half of vacation, and I can do our cut-outs and let the kids decorate them. In turns. I don't think I can handle all five kids at once. Besides, that will give us time for some one-on-one conversation - which I relish! Even with little kids!
Abi will be popping the chicken in the oven when she gets back...and warming up the ham after that. She'll make her turnip whipped potatoes. Ah, gastronomic orgasm!
Tomorrow will be Clam chowder and Broccoli Cheese soup, blue-cheese-stuffed-bacon-wrap
ped dates, and various munchables (including no doubt todays ham and chicken leftovers.)
Well, the timer is telling me to check on that squash. I am looking forward to a peaceful Christmas Eve and day. May God bless you all with the same!
