Update on Lily

Monday, December 23, 2013

Well, the vet called today with some bad news. The biopsy came back on our cat Lily and it was high grade lymphoma of the intestinal area. Unfortunately, they cannot treat it with oral chemotherapy. It would require IV chemotherapy weekly and with treatment, her life expectancy would be 7-12 months. Lily is a cat that hates to ride in the car and is extremely stressed going to the vet. She has feline herpes which sometimes flares up making her ill from the stress. My husband and I discussed it and we are inclined to not put her through treatment. She is having some gastrointestinal issues, but she is not in pain and she is eating, drinking and she is active. She is an affectionate cat and as long as she is comfortable, we are inclined to just treat her conservatively possibly with some steroids.

I think we'll know when it is the right time to take the next step. But for now we'll enjoy the time we have with her.

We have had to deal with similar pet health decisions in the past. Enjoy this time with her. Consider going to Hobby Lobby and getting a plaster kit for her paw print. I wish I had done this with our past pets. We did this recently for a friend whose dog has cancer and soon after passed. Praying for you guys as I know the loss of a loved pet they are part of our family!

The quality of the life is more important than the quantity of the life. It's a difficult decision to make. My mom one time had to decide whether to euthanize a dog and she decided to euthanized. She was faced with the decision for another dog and she decided to make her comfortable at home.

Take care and my prayers are with you and your family.

I'm so sorry, Noreen. She's a part of your family, and I know how hard that news must have been to hear. I applaud your decision, difficult as it must have been. Sometimes I think we put our pets through torture in our attempts to prolong their lives. Your choice is best for Lily. I'm sorry for you though, really sorry.

What awful news. I am so sorry. For what's it worth I agree with your decision. My husband and I had agreed on the same if our kitty's biopsy came back with bad news. Enjoy your time with her. emoticon emoticon
