Addicted to Pleasure - Sugar

This extremely interesting (& dare I say, "entertaining"?) BBC Documentary tells the history of sugar.

Such phrases as "sweet tooth", "epidemic levels of diabetes & obesity" & even "addiction to sugar" fit well with what you will learn from this program.

I was quite surprised to hear it said that "sugar was virtually unknown just a few hundred years ago"!

The quite disconcerting part of sugar's history is what some would do to others to produce that "White Gold". emoticon Sadly, the like is happening today in the growing of sugar cane to feed an ever growing "need", or should that be "greed", for sugar. You make that call!

The video is just shy of being an hour in length; however, I considered it time well spent. I hope that you will consider it so, too!

Thank you for sharing this video. It was very good. I heard said that sugar and fats together, ice cream, is deadly.

I am putting this information in print here, as a reminder to myself of a personal goal for this new year 2014 & beyond.

Today is my emoticon of no sugar intake. I determined that our first full day home after our CHRISTmas away would be the start of that endeavor --- so here goes! emoticon

I was "sugar-free" for eighteen months straight several years back. Remembering how much better I felt when not putting that white poison into my body has me determined to give it my all one more time.

May the good Lord bless me with success in this & all areas over the coming months!

emoticon emoticon I can see some 'new goals' to the 2014 list ........ NO sugar!! ...... I heard the man say even one sq. of chocolate found him to feel 'ill' ......... I believe sugar is the key in the ignition' that turns appetite ON ........... And it can last ALL day! ... I had a blended chai Sat. and felt like I was going to hyperventilate in a dept. store while shopping! ......... time to get a handle on this beast! ......... thanks again!

Sugar is a mysterious thing. They won't put it in most sodas, opting to put in that nasty high fructose corn syrup instead, and it can be pretty expensive to buy by the pound. Sugar, where I live, goes for about $4-$5 for 4 pounds, although for the past two months it is has been between $2-$3 for 4 pounds, which is quite cheap really.

Pair the white gold with white flour and were all in trouble. emoticon

I so agree with this. People only had sweet things for special occasions like Christmas and then used natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

Thanks for sharing. Sugar is definitely like a siren call for me. Must resist the white stuff! But I also agree with THINFITRAWKIND in that sugar itself isn't the enemy (our body needs some). The kind of sugar is key (and the amount).

I find it so interesting that our bodies adapt quite rapidly to lowered sugar intake. When I cut way back on sugar, my cravings for it cease within a day or two. Avoiding it in today's world is a struggle, though. Mindfulness is our greatest tool.

Thanks again!

Thank you for posting that link. I want to watch it and will go there momentarily.

Now, a word about sugar: Artificial sweeteners are not the way to go and I think anyone who uses them pays the price eventually. Natural sweeteners such as honey are fine especially if they are raw - which is rare and organic - also rare. Refined sugar is an addictive substance as we all know.

But, our bodies operate on simple carbs and simple carbs come from sugar. This is one thing that is often overlooked or poo-pooed. The source should always be from raw organic fruit.

As a raw low fat/high fruit carb/organic vegan I eat several pounds of raw organic fruit per day. No, I'm not a fruitarian! I get my greens and veggies in also. Fruit is not our enemy.

Many people confuse sugar with fruit and that is a disservice.

Thanks for the blog.

I will give it a watch over Christmas. I firmly believe that the powdered sugar is not the ultimate culprit. Food manufacturers are using more and more syrups and the like - liquid death imho!
