My birthday dinner: a report

For my birthday yesterday, my wife took me to a fancy restaurant that we both love. It was a chance for me to put two of my principles into action:

1) Since I am not on a diet, but am changing my behavior permanently, there cannot be any forbidden foods and there have to be occasional indulgences. For example, if you told me that I could never eat ice cream or cake again, I would tell you that there was no way I could do that for the rest of my life.

BUT ...

2) There is a BIG difference between an indulgence and an out-of-control pig out.

So with those two ideas in my head, my wife and I headed out to Sunflowers in Jaffrey, NH. We had a lovely meal and, yes, I indulged. I had a wine, a roll, a salad, an entree, and back at home a big piece of a Russian style cake that my wife had for me.

BUT ...

I cut back on my calories at lunch before going out, I didn't have any butter on my roll, and before I took a single bite of my entree, I split it in half. Then I ate one half and took the other half home with me for dinner the next night.

The bottom line was that I felt I had splurged and I went over my daily calories by a little bit, but I didn't binge and today I'm right back to Sparkin' along. And when I stood on the scale this morning, I hadn't gained an ounce.
