User Name Change!!

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted. Work and life get crazy, particularly around this time of year!

I wanted to update though that I have indeed changed my user name. I probably should have done this eons ago, but I got a message from a fellow Sparker reminding me about Internet Safety and Privacy. And I figured I'd pass it along.

I try really hard in my blog not to give away too much personal information, while of course trying hard to be open and honest. The biggest piece of personal information probably was my user name, a vestige from when I signed up and wanted to be known by my real name and not a pseudonym, as I had in the past.

Unfortunately, while most Internet peeps you will meet are perfectly nice and wouldn't harm a fly, there are some out there that make the Internet a nasty place to be. They are ones that can take bits and pieces and find out where you live, what your phone number is, etc.

And so, I've changed my username. Yeah, it's still not incredibly clever, but at the very least, I've removed my last name. (In case you were curious, I got the name idea from a Neil Diamond song.)

So this is just a reminder to everyone else to be safe on the Internet and cautious what you post!

Spark is strict on keeping their site safe for us to use. And, I agree with you that we need to keep our personal information to our selves for the most part.

Good idea! Actually, that happened to me once... On an online dating site, another user tracked me down to my facebook page from my username. At the time I didn't like having to add numbers to usernames, so I ended up creating a unique spelling of a certain name for various online groups. He googled the name and found it listed for a study group posting that somehow revealed my personal information, i.e., full real name, when inquired. The creepiest part was that this man thought this online stalker behavior was normal, as if he created another acceptable line of dialogue!

Learned my lesson.
