No more Mountain Dew

Monday, December 09, 2013

It has been very difficult for me, but I have given up my Mountain Dew. I sometimes jokingly say that I am addicted to Mountain Dew, but I really am not. I do love the flavor but mostly I drank it because it always takes the edge off my chronic headaches. In fact, for the past few months I have only drank some when I had a really bad headache....combined with some ibuprophen it will knock out a headache almost every time. These headaches are a part of my daily life and Mountain Dew was the only thing that helped me with the pain. I now have a headache all the time....no matter how much pain reliever I take, they will not go away. But, in addition to the calories it is loaded with caffeine, which is not good for my blood pressure, and sugar, which is not good for my blood glucose....I guess it is a trade off and I had to decide which is the lesser of two evils. I have now been without a Mountain Dew for almost a month and I have had a never ending ache in my head from mild to severe. Oh why, oh why can't water help my head feel better like Mountain Dew does?

Excedrin still contains caffeine - about the equivalent of one cup of coffee. Caffeine is known to help relieve migraine pain in conjunction with aspirin and acetominophen. Maybe you can take that in place of your Dew. At least it has no sugar or calories.

My Mother used to have chronic headaches and she would drink a cup of relatively strong coffee and take one or two aspirin and that was about all that would make them stop. She never did know or find out what caused them, but I remember her having them all through my childhood.

and I have read where the caffeine will often stop a headache because of it's interaction with the blood vessels.....

Hmmm start checking some of the things that you are eating. You could have an allergy to something. My mom used to get migraine headaches whenever she had MSG.

Thank you OHANAMAMA....Mountain Dew has a lot of caffeine in it, but what I am experiencing is not withdrawal....been there and done that with Coca Cola years ago. I have not been much of a soda drinker for years and when I drank Mountain Dew for my headaches I would have no more than 12 ounces and that would not be on a daily basis...only for the really bad headaches. I have chronic sinus/allergy issues. My doctor had me on prescription pain meds for a while to manage the headaches but they made me drowsy and out of it so I stopped taking them. I eventually discovered that ibuprophen chased with a little Mountain Dew did the trick....it is the only thing I have found that helps without making me drowsy or lethargic. I can also no longer take the ibuprophen...which works better for me than Tylenol...because of my blood pressure medication. I have tried every allergy medication out there and nothing is helping my allergies. I suppose it is just something I have to live with. If I could lose this weight and get my diabetes into remission and my blood pressure back to normal without meds Mt. Dew and ibuprophen would be an option again. It really is rough at times.

does Mt. Dew have caffeine? I'm not a Dew-er. hehehe but I drink a lot of coffee and when I don't... I get headaches like you describe. If it is a caffeine withdrawal headache, I can tell you to tuff it out... your body will eventually adjust. I opt to keep drinking coffee. :)

just saw that you don't do caffeine in your post below. I don't know what's going on... but I do hope you figure it out. :)

good luck!

Thanks, but caffeine free coffee just wouldn't work and caffeine raises my blood pressure too much....plus the only way I can stand to drink it is with loads of chocolate creamer, which is also loaded with sugar and calories. I can't seem to win on this one.
