High LDL

I went to the doctor for a physical last week and they did some blood tests and I got the results today. I have high cholesterol.

I thought I was healthy. Now I'm worried I have no idea what's really going on. I've been losing weight and exercising... but how do I fix a problem I didn't even really know I had.

So far I've done a bit of research on spark and other websites... And I joined the cholesterol support spark team. Anybody have any quick tips or helpful links for me?

    This should be even more motivation to stick with the Fast Diet, as it is supposed to help lower LDL levels. Hang in there!

    emoticon Your Dr is the Best Qualified to answer your Questions and give you Guidance on the Best Treatment -- It may be Medication, or Diet, or a Combination.
emoticon Exercise and eating right are your Best Tools and (in my Opinion) the Most Effective for controlling your Cholesterol. Try not to worry too much about this until you have talked with your Dr and gotten a Follow Up test. I never Trust One Test Result.

    New research is showing that your cholesterol may go up as a response of the body to some damage which is a precursor to heart disease, partly caused by diet (trans, not saturated fats, are the problem; naturally saturated fats were demonized but are good for you, everything in moderation of course), maybe smoking and other stuff too, and/or just because you're not eating enough cholesterol! The cholesterol could be building up to protect you; like... just because there are firefighters at a fire doesn't mean they set it. You know?

I would hope that they would have a nutritionist you can work with, but a lot of them are still in the super dark ages about fat and cholesterol so I hope you can get someone who has kept up with the current studies. Hope you are eating avocado and olive oil and bananas and lots of veggies and eggs and other things that keep you healthy and not worrying too much about everything being low-fat. I'm no doctor of course. But it seems like low fat high-carb diets might be causing, not helping, the problem, from everything I am reading.

I should have mine tested, too, and I'd be interested to see if all of the fried crap I used to (and sometimes still) eat is managing to overpower my uber-healthy most-of-the-time diet now.

Sigh.

    High LDL is usually from bad fats, most especially saturated fats. And trans fats are even worse. Too much alcohol can also raise LDL.

So, since you are speaking specifically about your LDL, if I were you I would get off all fried foods, all processed foods etc. (things like crackers and donuts, and the like are especially high in trans fats) (animal foods are especially high in saturated fats).

People with high LDL (bad) cholesterol have about twice the risk of heart disease.

If your triglicerides go up that increases the risk of plaque in your arteries.

Work on lowering your LDL and triglicerides as well as on increasing your HDL, and you soon will find your cholesterol levels with a better ratio (activity raises HDL, smoking lowers it).
