My Granddaughter's First 5K

Monday, December 09, 2013

My daughter shared something awesome with me. Her 9 year old daughter is involved with "Girls on the Run" for girls in school who want to learn about health and safety. It's a club. She loves it. They have healthy snacks during their time together and learn about nutrition. They also go out and run each meeting.

On Saturday they had their 5K, which I later found out Abi had wanted to invite me to run with her. She will invite me in the Spring and I can't wait to see her little body take on a 5K! She's as tiny as a 6-year old. Her mom, dad and 10 year old brother all took part. Mom and dad ran with her, and bro ran with his friends. There were people all along the path cheering them on. My daughter said that when Abi ran by one of the moms, the mom yelled out "I'm so proud of you! You're doing awesome!" There were girls from all grades with their families. Must've been an awesome event to witness. Abi was so in awe that she was a part of something "so big"

I'm so proud of her. My daughter said Abi had asked what lap they were on before they even passed the first one. She said wow this is hard! They walked and ran. Deanna said the amount they ran off and on was about one third of the 5K.

Deanna also told me that her and her hubby (who are trim build) had talked in August on their honeymoon that they'd like to do the couch to 5K. Now they are more seriously considering it. They were all very sore on Saturday night and Sunday. But what a great event for them to participate in as a family!

This is a first for anyone in our family! They handed out medals to each of the young participants and they all got tagged with a number 1. Would have loved a picture of this to share with you all. Next Spring I'll try to take a couple.

Abi is number one in my book! Go Abi!

What a wonderful, positive experience for Abi, and the family!

Cheering at races is really fun! It's been a while since I've done it, but it is awesome to give that encouragement to the runners as you can see it on their face that it is uplifting!

Look forward to pictures from the next one!

This is great! My 9 year old son ran 2 5ks with me this year and one of them he got a medal for 1st place in his age group. I think he is hooked! It is a wonderful thing to get families active together! Sounds like an awesome idea for a club too! emoticon

That is so great! I actually just contacted this group in my area to volunteer with them. In the Spring I will probably run with one of the girls when they run a 5k. Really looking forward to it! What a great group and what a self-esteem builder.

That is awesome. I would love to run a 5k in an actual race. I can do about 2 miles now, but I know I can get back to doing my own personal 5k.

it's great to see the focus on HEALTH with young girls rather than thinness. There is too much body distortion in our young women!

This is FANTASTIC! So nice to see that such a club exists.

I did something similar to Couch to 5K to help me learn to run. I was almost running a full 30 minutes by the end of that nine weeks. That is a great idea to get them going.

WAY TO GO ABI!! I'm so proud of her!
