Day 738- New iPad Mini! App Suggestions?

Monday, December 09, 2013

So I won a contest and got a $200 Apple Gift Card and decided to get an iPad Mini. I obviously got the SparkPeople App, but any fun apps, games or otherwise I should check out?

Not much going on life wise. Work continues to be stressful. My assistant's contract ends December 31, and the plan was to have a new job posting listed in December so we'd have someone hired and ready to work by January 6, but that position hasn't even been posted. So I feel a bit on the edge of the brink, and am worried about when I come back from break and no longer have help and will have to do all my work alone. Plus, I'm not sure when the position will be posted so that could mean months without an assistant. I think I'll manage, but I'm already stressed so I'm just hoping it will all work out.

Last week wasn't a great week for me workout wise, but I stayed relatively on track with food and managed to lose 1.6 of the pounds I gained over Thanksgiving. I'm in a bit of a funk. I think it's a combination of the cold weather as well as JD being gone, that I just don't feel like doing anything. I know I should, but he's such a good motivator and when he's home in Dayton, I'd rather just catch up on my laundry, and sleep. Maybe the seasons affect me too.

Who knows. At least I'm still headed in the right direction. I had hopes of hitting 170 by New Year's but that is a bit of a stretch now, so let's just focus on feeling good and destressing. Maybe I'll try some YouTube Yoga videos.

Love you Sparkfriends!

The season definitely has an impact on me I'm finding. Seems to be a similar story from everyone I know here on Spark. It's just tougher for some reason. Stress levels are on high, and it seems like it takes every last bit of mental focus to push through it all. Life is a big bowl of emotional moments, ups and downs, highs and lows... hopefully deep breaths will help you get through, and before you know it you'll be back and re-energized to hit it hard.

Oh, and if the seasons affect you, even if you are not sure, plug in some "daylight" strength light bulbs into your sockets. They have helped me immensely...especially since I work night shift and feel trapped in darkness when winter comes. :). Love those daylight compact fluorescent bulbs...I plugged them into the sockets I use most and into the sockets I use when I first wake up.

That's pretty much the equivalent to the treatment for SAD- seasonal affective disorder.

I totally get your on edge feeling. And when you do have to do the work all by yourself, you will probably start to feel a little insane. My job as a nurse is at least 90% of my workdays teetering on the edge of insanity.
Working out, especially cardio and long, long walks away from all responsibilities works well for me. Although when it's really crazy at work, I'm too tired and unmotivated. Then I watch my favorite tv shows on the Nbc, cbs, abc, etc channel apps or play Sims Free (style?). It's addictive, but it distracts my brain from everything that went wrong that day (with no comfort food calories) and I eventually regain my objectivity and can find at least some positives. And then catch up on errands, lol.

You have great luck for a $200 gift card. I have an ipad mini too. I mainly use it for e-mail and netflix lol. My phone and ipad have most of the normal apps. I really like to keep up with my finances without having to log into mobile banking sites. I also have pinterest of course and the Target app. I need some more interesting ones. I hope your funk lifts soon!

congrats on the apple card, hope you like your new mini. i just got an iphone so iv been loving all the app choices out there. I havent found an awesome workout app yet, but Im cheap and have only downloaded free apps so far. I really love List Ease, its a great free list maker, but you can upgrade to have unlimited lists. I might upgrade I like it so much. I am addicted to Zulily and have bought all my gifts for family from there. Its tooo easy. Good deals. Sorry to hear your honey is gone and the stress at work. Relax with some yoga and hot tea.

I totally get you about the seasonal shift. I am so sick of winter and cold weather already. I cannot even imagine being without Charlie, too horrible to contemplate. I want a WII, I am hoping it will get me motivated to exercise. I do walk the dogs 80 minutes a day. My main funk comes from wrapping presents that took me a long time and money to buy and I swear even longer to wrap and mail and the mailing cost $25. Crazy!!!!

We all go through those periods. Realizing we are in a funk and taking steps to come out of it is a step in the right direction. Glad you were able to stay on track with food and lose the weight from Thanksgiving! You can get some activity in (maybe if the weather is bad and you can't go to the gym workout at home).

Apps....hmm....I like Instagram (are you participating in the Instagram challenge on SP? #sparktheseason's fun. Each day you post a pic. That might be a fun way to get out of the funk!) Instacollage to make photo collages. Facebook, Twitter (if you use them), Grocery IQ--good for making grocery lists. Kindle app to read books. Overdrive you can check out e-books and audiobooks from the library and read them on your iPad. Flibboard is a cool way to read the news. Groupon, Living Social, Amazon for shopping. Vitacost (to buy vitamins and health products cheaply), Netflix to stream movies & shows. YouTube. NBC you can watch shows. Yahoo weather (they have great pictures of your city and it shows the weather. I like it better than the Apple weather app.)

Have fun with the new iPad mini! So cool that you won that! emoticon

Dancing would be a good thing. I guess when we are as busy and under as much stress as you are then we do what we can and just try to keep moving as much as we can. emoticon

Exercise and getting out of a funk, plus the Ellen suggestion makes me think... DANCING! You're home alone -- go for it!

I have harassed all the people whose blogs I enjoy reading and so far 3/5 of them have posted new blogs!

Anywho, you are doing great. If you're in a funk though, take it easy on yourself and do something specifically that makes you feel good. If you can afford it, get a pedicure. Take a bath. Do something just for you!

How about the game Heads Up (from Ellen DeGeneres)? That looks like it would be a lot of fun and could maybe get you out of your funk. emoticon
