RESTART - December 9, 2013 - Consistent healthy LIVING!

Monday, December 09, 2013

"The process of getting healthy has to be about more than just losing weight and focusing on ourselves. Itís not about adjusting our diets and hoping for good physical results. Itís about recalibrating our souls so that we want to change for the right reasons. Iíve realized that a healthy eating plan can be one of the most significant spiritual journeys Iíd ever dared to take with God."
"Made to Crave by" Lysa Terkurst

Today is a new day in my healthy lifestyle journey.

I have been a part of the Biggest Loser Challenge here on Sparkpeople for 4 rounds. In the first one I had moderate success but I did a lot of bingeing and purging to lose weight- not healthy, I know. The second I was in a bad place mentally and dropped out of the round. But last round was AWESOME! I made healthy changes and the weight flew off. So I went into this round with high hopes and expectations. My goal weight was in sight and I was going to do whatever it took to get there... Well that lead my right back to the destructive patterns of my first BLC - bingeing then purging. As you can expect - it has gotten me no where in my weight loss, but frustrated and mad at myself for my lack of self control.

So I was trying to figure out the difference between this round and last round. Last round my focus was CONSISTENCY. I wasn't focusing on my weight as much as accomplishing a list of Daily Goals.

This is from my Pre-BLC22 blog -
"Daily Goals
1) Daily Quiet time first thing in the morning and focus on God not food throughout the day
2) 8+ cups of water
3) 5+ freggies
4) Exercise at least 10 minutes everyday
5) Limit wheat and sugar
- This is the hardest for me. I would like to completely cut them out but for now I will work on limiting them. If I cut completely then I tend to get to a point where I binge. So in working on consistency, I will limit consumption.
6) Limit Internet movies and TV, story books.
- I tend to look to these things when I am feeling lonely or bored (in addition to eating). That usually happens on the weekends or the evenings. Instead of turning to these things I will check in on here or read my bible or bible study books.
7) Log food - The good the bad and the ugly
-This will help me be intentional about what I eat and how much"

And you know what? I accomplished these - Consistently! For the whole round! What changed?!?! My focus. I thought I should try to focus on something else this round so I chose strength - but I lost my consistency and my focus on God being the number one thing in my life. So when that focus changed so did my success. I was trying to do it on my own in my own way instead of seeking after God, asking for his help and doing it HIS way.

My exercise focus has changed too . This summer, I did almost all of my exercising outside and it was great! Running, walking, biking, and lifting weights (not usually outside) But that is not possible where I live now. (It is - 6 degrees right now!) So I have been doing P90X workouts- which are great but can get monotonous and long.

So today is the beginning of a new healthy LIVING journey! I am not going to punish myself for over-indulgences or a number on the scale. I am going to live!!! I am going back to my daily goals! I will actually eat instead of trying to starve myself to a certain number on a scale! But most importantly, I will focus on God- knowing, loving and serving Him with all that I am and all that I have!!

Even though we are almost to the end of this BLC round - this is just the beginning for me!!

Daily Goals
1) Daily Quiet time first thing in the morning and focus on God not food throughout the day
2) 8+ cups of water
3) 5+ freggies
4) Exercise at least 10 minutes everyday
5) Limit wheat, caffeine and sugar
6) Limit Internet movies and TV, story books.
7) Log food - The good the bad and the ugly

Exercise
I will allow myself to enjoy my workouts again - if I don't want to do my P90X I will be okay with that. I will substitute 30 Day shred, Taebo or riding my bike trainer.

Monday - 30 Day shred L1
Tuesday - Plyo X
Wednesday - Chest, Shoulders, Tris, Ab ripper
Thursday - Cardio X
Friday - Back, Biceps, Ab ripper
Saturday - Kenpo X
Sunday - X stretch

So today I will not worry about a number on the scale but I will focus on GOD and work at consistently achieving these daily goals!

Elsa, You are SO on track !! And perhaps this IS also the way to maintain ongoing. Setting the right priorities and goals and then putting one foot in front of the other every day.

Great blog Elsa. It took me years of starting over, each time equipped with more information to help me through. I do know that punishment/rewards do not work with me but tracking does. Ie, 5 days of exercise a week and get a treat, as opposed to sticker each day I exercise to visually see what I did. Just because your behavior was not the greatest in earlier rounds, don't discount what you learned. The key is to focus on what you can do and track (eating, water, fitness minutes) and not weight which has factors (stress, hormones) that you can not control.

Enjoyed reading this post Elsa. It is motivating me to look at my own behaviors lately. You cannot fix a problem unless you know what the problem is. Good for you that you are taking a close look at what you have/have not been doing that has made a difference in your success instead of just throwing up your hands and saying, "Well the PROGRAM just isn't working anymore." I think it is more likely the WE are not working the PROGRAM anymore!

Great goals. I like the goals that are not only about fitness but about the quiet time with God. It will certainly put us in a positive mood for the rest of the day.

This sounds good Elsa. Itís good to give yourself permission not to do a certain workout if youíre dreading it. Itís hard when you donít have the option of working out outside. I like to be able to change things up by having lots of variety. There are good workouts on youtube too (ie. fitness blender)
I hope you have great success with focussing on your daily goals, especially time with God, not the number on the scale.

You have found a good strategy. I can never succeed when my focus is weight. It has to be about treating myself well and attaining the energy level I feel best at.
