Loving Those Fractions - Tales from 100# Down

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Tuesday, December 03, 2013

I weigh every day. For those of you that don't I fully support your decision not to (grin) for me it's a check and balance. If I see an uptick I work a little harder to eliminate sodium, push water and eat cleaner. If I see it go down it motivates me to push even more. It's brought me to a place where I have learned to love the fractions! My scales measure to the tenth of a pound and some days that TEENY loss is enough to make me feel good about my progress and push forward.

Today was just such a day 0.2 down. Oh how I love that "down" part. Those fractions add up. I've lost a "whole" human being off my frame over three years and 4 months. It didn't come in big chunks (oh at the very beginning when I was 350 I was losing 3-4 pounds a week but that quickly slowed when I got under 300 to 1 lb. a week and in the past year it's been more like 0.5 ... but it ADDS up.

I was asked to do an "exercise" for a sparkpeople team where I had to list how I had changed and I'm going to share a few of them with you:

1) I drink no soda pop (none since June 2012)
2) I share entrees at restaurants
3) I don't eat fast food OTHER than Subway and Wendy's small chili on occasion.
4) I never order a burger and fries
5) I have increased my fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains.
6) I have learned to ask for special prep on my food in restaurants.
7) I exercise DAILY
8) I have walked two official 5K's and many virtual ones.
9) I fit in an airplane seat with NO extender
10) I can go up and down stairs without huffing and puffing
11) I have NORMAL blood chemistry!
12) I have more toned muscles.
13) I SMILE a lot more
14) I have learned how to read nutrition labels and do!
15) I can go through turnstiles normally
16) I can sit in booths and have room left over
17) I don't feel like everyone is staring at me in public places.
18) My doctor is THRILLED
19) I have more energy and do more.
20) I have hope for a brighter future.

Yes I LOVE fractions now! I've left a trail of fractions behind me.

Take joy in your fractions. They count!

It really is the little things that add up over time... it sounds like you have a TON of little things that are helping you stick with going in the right direction, and that's awesome!

For me, I'm at the stage right now where weighing once a week is still the best. The reason is that if I check one day and my weight is "lower" I'll go "oh, this means I can eat more". Then the next day if my weight is higher (which it would be after eating more) I go "whoops, cut it back". Wash, rinse, repeat. It's just goofy and doesn't let me focus on the big picture.

I imagine my choices will change when I get to maintenance, but for now, that's what works for me.

Glad you've found something that works for you too!

Awesome!! Great for you!! I also weigh in every day. And I write it on the calender! I love to be able to see how it goes up and down. And the fractions DO count! When my daughter comes home from college she likes ot look at the calender and see how I am doing. Keep up the good work!!

I absolutely have to get on the scale daily for the exact reasons you mentioned. And those fractions in the downward range certainly are motivating, but I do have to admit that when the fractions head in the wrong direction - sometimes rather than motivating me, it just depresses me and makes me feel defeated.

However, I like what you wrote about it making you work harder - and I know I need to adopt that same mindset.

So thanks - your blog really made me feel like there is a better way to deal with the scale when it is treacherous and mean and doesn't show me the numbers I want to see. I'm going to work on that as my next week's "focused goal"...but if I'm very very good then maybe it won't fraction up at all!

Congratulations! Those are fantastic changes! I aspire to check many of those things off the list, myself.

I weigh every day, too. While it may be discouraging to see a teeny gain in weight, it just reminds me why I'm doing this--and pushes me to do better the next day!

I used to be a daily weigher but when I joined SP I decided to weigh once a week. I have noticed a difference in my motivation. It is less! So I have gone back to weighing daily. Yes, indeed, those "fractions" are a great motivator for me. Especially around holidays.

Congrats to you!
