Today I had my first face-to-face meeting with my elderly person for "Age Concern" as a visitor. I have been waiting to get paired with someone for several months. I had a possible 2 before today and they ended up having some unfortunate health issues and had to go into nursing homes etc.
Several days ago I rang "Maria" and set up a time to come over and give her some company and meet. I heard her Dutch accent and it made me happy and excited. I was raised in a German and Dutch filled home and surrounded by people that spoke Dutch and German all the time...:)
I arrived and she made me feel welcome. It took us a little while to feel comfortable though. Maria is 92 years old (93 years old next week) and lives on her own. She has lived in New Zealand for 60 years and being in her house felt like home. She even had the same clock on her mantel that my grandparents had. The same dishes, decorating style, windmill cookies, tea in proper tea cups and tea spoons, etc. Everything had a place and was perfect...just like my house growing up! W hile I was there to give her company and someone to talk to, she gave me so much more. I miss my Oma and Opa more than anyone or anything and after spending a couple hours with her, I believe Maria was sent to me to be my Oma-ish person in my life. I feel honoured. I look forward to our weekly visits and I am pretty sure none of them will be an hour (that's my requirement as a volunteer). I've been on a little high all day. :)
