A very good reminder for me...

Sunday, December 01, 2013

This week I will be eating out three days in a row... holiday dinners. I just read a Spark article about how not to gain weight over the holidays. A long article, but one of the points on the last page could have been written just for me.

It said, "don't eat as if this this is your only chance to eat". And I realized that this is what I sometimes do when faced with a menu, or a buffet table. Everything sounds and looks so good.

I eat carefully, and well, most of the time at home. I try to keep very tempting (read "a lot of things I really like") foods out of the house. Or at least out of the kitchen cupboards and kitchen fridge. Peter keeps his chips, salted nuts, candy and cookies either downstairs or up in his office. I know they're there, but I don't take them... at least not very often.

But when I look at a menu, I want the French onion soup. Forget the sodium. Or the coconut shrimp. And if there's creme caramel on the buffet table... well, you can imagine.

This week I will remind myself that I can choose one treat, but not all of them at once. I will focus on talking to people. I will drink water or club soda. I won't let the food be the main attraction of the party.

I will remember... I will remember... I will...

Thank you for the timely reminder on how to approach holiday eating. It's so difficult sometimes to see all the goodies, but we all need to remember we have other opportunities to eat and even to cheat. Focusing on the people at the gathering is definitely the mindset to have!

This could have been written for me as well. It is so much easier at home, when I can decide what to keep in the cupboards or not! Thank you for a great reminder.

Gail, those are great reminders for me also! I am too easily tempted at social occasions, and I need to concentrate more on my friends and pleasant conversation, and less on the buffet!

You will REMEMBER !!
When you go with a plan it is much easier to make your healthier choices.
Healthier HABITS are PLANNED choices.
Go girl and have a great time... free from the "Morning After" guilt.

  Hi Gail.........
Your blog was written just for me...........I, too, am invited out for 3 luncheons this week and will definitely follow your advice (especially after my negative experience over Thanksgiving). It just isn't worth it to over-indulge on the wrong foods.

I know you'll do fine, you are strong and determined! I like that part about not eating as if this was your last chance to eat!

We have a lot of family parties during the holidays and I tend to over eat too. Sometimes I feel like I'm being rude if I don't eat the yummy things they prepared. I need to be more cautious of the amount I eat, and maybe just take a little to taste, not a whole serving.
