Hi folks! The penguin's back!

Saturday, November 30, 2013

My job offered a wellness check for a substantial decrease on my health insurance premium. It was more like a wellness wake-up call. My scale battery had long since died and my medication is notorious for weight gain. I was 15 pounds over my highest estimate! I set a goal of losing 1 pound a week and getting under 200 pounds by my two year work anniversary which is June 11 of next year (2014). I'm currently at 236.

I noticed in my last blog entry I was just starting my job. I'm happy to report I've been there year and a half and have done well. It's quite an accomplishment for me to stay at a job a year and a half without incident. I feel very proud of this. My interpersonal skills have grown by leaps and bounds, as well as my ability to keep perspective and to let go of things I can't control. All in all I have dramatically increased my ability to see how my actions affect others. I work for an online travel website and I handle high-volume customers as well as hotels that need help with reservations. I also handle car and air bookings. We handle concerns as well as the bookings, so we're basically one-stop shopping.

My weight loss plan involves intentional walking (an extra 1.5 miles to work each day), taking the stairs, avoiding the snacks-laden breakroom, adding recreational exercise, caloric reduction and Sparkpeople. A coworker recommended employing SMART goals:
Small
Manageable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-Bound

With that in mind, I changed my goal from losing 25 pounds in six months to 1 pound a week. My original goal was to get to 199 by June 11 but now I realize I'm going to need some extra time to achieve that goal. 37 weeks is needed to make that a SMART goal for me, so we'll look toward the end of September as my target date to hit the 199 mark.

My DH's company does one for all adult members on his policy, so I get one too each year. At first I was not happy about it but it was only because I was kidding myself about my weight problem. Last summer I became determined that I would score better than the year prior since so much was riding on it this year and I started back up with Spark. I lost 5% of my body weight before my checkup with them. I can do a 6 month checkin in February and I think I will since I've lost almost 15% now. I truly believe that wellness check has saved my life.
