Attitude of Gratitude Challenge - DAY FOUR

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

This week is Thanksgiving, so here's a Thanksgiving Challenge for all my sparkfriends. Every day this week post one thing you are grateful for that doesn't appear to be a blessing and then explain why you are thankful for it.

By changing the way we look at our every day chores and hardships, we can turn our attitudes into gratitudes for all the many, many things we are so blessed with!

Today I am thankful for friendship. I have a very dear friend, the first friend I made when I left New York, all my family and friends, and moved to Tennessee where I knew no one. Doreen was the first person I met and we bonded immediately. Over the years we have become as close as much so, her daughters think we actually ARE related. We have stood beside each other through joys and hardships. Most recently Doreen has been going through a very hard time. She is getting a divorce, leaving her husband who is verbally abusive and an alcoholic. Her daughters, my "nieces" have been having an especially difficult time with this. All that explained, this is what I am thankful for...

My nieces. I love them with all my heart.

Doreen has been going to therapy with her husband now that he is in rehab and then also therapy herself. On those nights I take the Jordyn (11) and Addisyn (7) for "Girls Night Out". Tonight we went to an Italian restaurant where pasta and giggles abounded. We were super silly! Then we went to Barnes & Noble where I bought them books (they are voracious readers and I love to encourage that) and then we got warm brownies (well they did, I was good) and hot cocoas with whipped cream where even more giggles and goofiness abounded! It did my heart good to see them just be kids again. They were so happy and free without a care in the world! I only wish I could do this for them every day.

While we were eating dinner Addisyn asked me, "Aunt Raina, how come you and Uncle George don't have kids?" I turned to her and said, "I have you guys. I don't need anyone else." She leaned over and gave me the BIGGEST hug and said quietly, "Good. Because I don't want to share you." I just melted into a big pile of goo!! I love them so much!!
