Bad Bird at Turkey Time

Monday, November 25, 2013

Here is my dilemma:
I drove 35 miles, bought my turkey on sale, and then defrosted it. This is what I found inside that thick white wrapper:

I drove back to the store, and then got my money back from an unhappy meat man. I was eaqually unhappy with the extra 70 mile drive. The meat man told me that the meat is perfectly fine. I did not back down. He can give his own wife the turkey with a bruise.
What would you have done?

Geeze oh PETE! You just can't trust our food supply any more! I probably would have googled bruises on turkeys first...but still...something is definitely off with that bird.

The guy is GOING to tell you it's perfectly okay..that's his job. And I so agree...let his family eat it if he is so dad blasted sure of the fact.

I hope your new bird is so tasty and so lovely that you forget all about that earlier bad experience...I'm just so happy you got a look at it before Thanksgiving Day..that would have completely have ruined the entire eating experience.

You were RIGHT to stand your ground! emoticon emoticon

Yup. Definitely a return. While the meat may have been edible, the presentation was not! Obviously grocery products can be as shoddy as any other product we might buy.

Taken it back. You were right, you paid a price for a product that was sub-par and had the potential to make your family ill. If I had gotten another bird from this store, the only thing I would have done in addition is I would have insisted on them opening the wrapper on the second bird before I made that long drive again. You did the right thing.

I would have returned it, gotten my money back and gone elsewhere (if possible) for another turkey. I have never seen anything like that on any turkey I've ever cooked in 30 yrs. I wouldn't trust. What caused the buise? IF there was contamination, would cooking take care of the germ(s)? Those are questions I would not want to find out the answer to the hard way. You did the right thing.

Wow, never seen a bruise that big before. It makes me wonder how long it was sitting around.

I would definitely have returned it! Who wants to eat one that looks like that?!

I probably would not want a bruised turkey either, on sale or not. But for a long drive like that, I may have just given the bruised part to the dogs. emoticon

I'd have been diving back to the store too. The Turkey Farms get extra for birds that look they all should look as good as they taste.

Probably would have been safe to eat. I think it is just blood pooling at a bruise, from processing.
But you bought, and paid for the Quality and aesthetics.
I feel you should have also been compensated for the long travel time necessary to return it!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving! emoticon

The way that turkeys and chickens get killed can be very inhumane can be hurt before it was killed Packed in barns like sardines in a can

I would have returned it but then I have two grocery stores within 3 miles of my house. And I have too have never seen that. My hubby once stopped an Acme on his way home from work and got a package of thin chicken fillets for dinner. I opened them as soon as he came in and was overwhelmed by the awful smell of them. I called the store and they asked me which Acme was closest to me so I told them and they said take to them. I did that and they gave me another package and returned the money hubby spent for the chicken. That is what I call great customer service and my go to first grocery store!!!

Hope your second turkey is much better and I have to agree your money should have been returned along with the second turkey!
