Very good 5K race today

Saturday, November 23, 2013

I've been running for two years now, and a few things I've figured out:

- I prefer warm weather over cold for running
- I don't like wind when I am running!
- I am amazed just how warm I do get when I am running, even on a cold day!

So today's race, the 40th annual Turkey Trot in Newark, Delaware, had both chilly temps, wind, and a new wrinkle for me -- a hilly course! It was in the 40's at race time, but cloudy and windy, so it felt much colder!

In spite of that plus the hills, I am happy with the result -- 29:33 -- good for 10th place in my age bracket and 285th place over all. Between the 10K and the 5K, there was over 800 runners, which does lead me to my one complaint of the race organizers -- only 3 porta-potties?? Seriously?? Oh well, thank goodness for some remote trees!

And one of those portapotties is there all the time - so they really only brought in two extra.... I never saw the line with fewer than 20 people in it. Crazy.

I had on two layers of tights, a wool shirt, a fleece, a vest, gloves and a hat, and never broke a sweat. I was FREEZING! There was a guy running a little ahead of me wearing nothing but a pair of floral swim trunks and some Vibrams. I don't know how he did it....

Congrats on making your goal time! No easy feat in that wind! I was nearly blown over turning onto Valley Road by the gusts coming across that open field!

Well done! I t is good to figure out what you like! I prefer running in the cool to cold myself. Give me 20s to 40s and I will be pretty happy. Keep up the great running!

Good running despite the weather! I'm still trying to figure out how to dress for colder weather. I've been layering up, but I've also been getting too hot. I guess that's the benefit of layers...take one off at a time.

Lack of port-a-potties is not good! emoticon I'm a go in the woods type of gal, if the need be.

I'm glad you had a good race.

Great run in conditions that aren't your favorite.
Personally I like running when it's in the 40's but only when the wind is light and there is no rain, unlike my run this morning.

Insufficient port-potties is Bad New, but in the 40s is good running weather!

I had temps in the low 40s for my first two Thanksgiving Day races. I overdressed the first year, got it right last year. This year, the forecast is in the 20s. That's a bit cold, but I'm more concerned about the pre-race prep time than the race itself.

Wowza that's some good running! But what's with the limited porta-potties emoticon ? That's not good, lol. Glad you had a good run--congrats!
