Baby, It's Cold Outside

Friday, November 22, 2013

It was 27F this am and got up to a whopping 32F during the day. I don't do cold well. I prefer to spend my days wrapped in a thick fuzzy blanket (or several!).

I started thinking, though, about my childhood and what we did in the winter. I had a Pinto named Dixie who looked very much like this horse.

We would go out for sleigh rides with Dixie puling the sleigh.

We would go ice skating either on the pond at home, or in the backyard rink at my uncle's house.

Do any of you remember these?

My hands get so cold and I hate wearing gloves. I am considering getting a hand muff.

I hand one as a kid, but it looked like this. Did you?

Did any of you ever do this?

I stuck my tongue on the metal handle of a shovel.

We also cut our own Christmas trees. We lived in a forest so there were no lot trees for us!

Do you remember these nightgowns and mop caps? I loved them!

This one shows you that I was even fat as a kid!

We would have family night every Sunday with games, popcorn and iced tea (Sweet Tea).

Today I am thankful for warm memories on a cold night...

You're so adorable wrapped in that blanket!!! Yes, I do remember all the above thing you mentioned. Now, I never stuck out my tongue and put it on a pole, but then again I didn't have to, as I had a built in device. I wore braces and I had what they called a face bowl, which was held in place my special wires in my mouth, along with a band around my neck. So, I actually had this metal semicircle from ear to ear, and during the winter when I would lick my lips, oh my gosh!!! I'd get stuck every time. It always hurt so bad. I don't even remember how I got my tongue off of the metal, all I remember is the pain!!! They still have those face bowls today, and my heart goes out to the people who have to war them!!!

Be blessed,

I remember the nightgowns and yes, the tongue on the flag pole--wasn't me but I did suggest it! We'd have pancakes for breakfast on Sundays--Dad would make them. (Parents don't remember this but I do!) Stay warm!

Cute Cute Cute. What great memories. I had a hand muff that I loved! We had a big old house that was expensive to heat and was always freezing cold inside, My mom put my PJ's in the dryer before bed.

Such cute pictures of you growing up. Love the one of you and Santa. I remember those little coordinated caps that matched your nightgown. When it gets really cold I wish I had one of those.

Some good ones in here....loved the tongue on the pole. I bought a box of cards a few years back with a fifties/sixties era picture of a boy with his tongue stuck to the pole and inside it said, "Hathy Chriffmath"! I send a whole variety of cards to my core address book but this was one of the ones I got the most hysterical responses too!

I had regular figure skates, not the double blade. And our nightgowns and caps were red and white striped and came in big stockings from Santa. Thanks for the memories, Jaynee!!
