I noticed that my long-sleeve shirt drawer was becoming really overstuffed so I sorted through it to pull out clothes that I don't currently wear, because I have inflated like a balloon over the past twelve months and my clothes are not letting me forget. Approximately half the long-sleeve shirts that I own came out of the drawer. On the one hand - yay, I can close my drawer again! But at the same time 24 shirts (yes, I counted) at $15-20 a pop means I have a pile of useless cloth sitting around that's worth more than I spend on groceries in a month. And that's just one drawer! If you factor in the clothes in my short-sleeve drawer, my pants drawer, skirts, dresses, hanging shirts, and even a couple of coats…I've probably got a solid paycheck or two's worth of clothing laying around, completely useless.
I'm not going to get rid of anything, because these are clothes that I purchased in the past three years, and one year ago it all fit me. If I can put on twenty pounds in one year of stress and illness and grad school and bad eating, I can sure as hell get it off again somewhat quickly. But I think I'll leave that pile of shirts sitting out where I can see them. The next time I'm tempted by gluten-free spaghetti or a pint of ice cream I'll remember that I've got a pre-paid cache of cute clothing waiting as my reward for staying healthy!
