3WBC #14 The Woman in the Mirror

14. True or false: I like the way I look. Elaborate.
I do and I don’t like the way I look. Some of the artifacts of ageing don’t agree with me—the wrinkly skin, the baggy eyes, spots and blotches that, once arrived, are here to stay. Some times and from some angles, I hardly recognize the old lady in the mirror. But I think the way my hair is graying is pretty cool (changing from a summer to a winter ptarmigan). Over all, I’m not extremely freaked out by the changes the years have wrought, but that’s largely because I’ve never set a lot of store by my appearance, wanting to be memorable for other, less tangible qualities.
I do like the improvement from my weight loss so far. I can’t help being very pleased with myself when people notice the recent difference and compliment me on it. And I frequently wonder what I’ll look like 15, 30, or 40 pounds from here.
I regret (a little) that I didn’t appreciate my appearance when I was a young woman. As most of us do, I was obsessed with my perceived flaws, but looking at pictures of my younger self now I think, ”Hey, I was pretty cute back then. Wish I would have realized it at the time!”
