First, thanks to all who visited my website, Tribute to the Crew of USS Philadelphia
This morning I received an email from a visitor to the site who solved a 70 year old mystery.
I got my love of sports from my Dad, specifically NY Sports – The old Brooklyn Dodgers and even the Yankees once the Dodgers deserted us for Los Angeles.
Dad told me that during WWII he served with LT MacPhail who was the general manager of the Yankees. He even had a picture of the ship’s baseball team which is now part of my website. I could never confirm Dad’s memory although 2 of the surviving crew members backed up his story.
This morning’s email was from a man whose boss was the former Lt. MacPhail. It seems that Lt WILLIAM MacPhail was the SON of Larry MacPhail and BROTHER of Lee MacPhail who are now both in the baseball hall of fame. So Dad got it almost right.
My source told me that he remembers a plaque on his boss’s desk with Lt - USS Philadelphia under his name. After the war Lt MacPhail joined the family business (baseball), but left for a career in Sports Broadcasting (President of CBS Sports and founder of CNN Sports).
So although Dad’s shipmate wasn’t running the Yankees as he thought, he was responsible for much of the sports we watched together on TV and that’s a nice memory.
