7 mile run on Sunday. Longest. Run. EVER!

Monday, November 11, 2013

Earlier last week, I saw on my Galloway Easy 5K app a 7 mile run coming up, the longest training run on the app, so given that I had never run that distance before, I planned to do it on Sunday when I had the time to enjoy it and not have to rush back to work.

I had the app set for a 4/1 run/walk ratio on my previous training runs, but since this was a new distance for me, I set it back to a 3/1 ratio. On top of that, it was a VERY windy day on Sunday (gusts over 30mph!), so headwind running was not too much fun (but boy, was the tailwind running fantastic!).

I completed the run in 1 hour 18 minutes. No records were ever in danger! My goal was simple - complete the run and set a new personal distance record, which I did. It had been a long time since I had even done a 10K distance, so this proved to me that if I sign up for a 10K, I can make it. Obviously, I would want to lower my time, but that will come when I start training for that distance.

I'm willing to bet there are going to be some VERY long training runs on the Galloway 10K app, so this will be a challenge for me, but the sense of accomplishment yesterday is something I am enjoying very much.

Oh, and the Achilles tendon -- a little sore this morning, but nothing a few days of non-running won't fix.

Nice way to start the week...

Congratulations on your 7 mile run and your new personal record distance.
I find it interesting that you run 7 miles to get ready for a 3.1 mile race. It is good training. The 5K should now seem short, even the 10K will not seem that threatening after this training run.
Good job.
Won't be long and you'll be training for a half marathon. You're already over half way there.

Congratulations on the long distance with good (non) injury report!

It can be scary to stretch that distance, coming back from an injury. So far, you're ahead of me; my long run on Saturday was 6.66 miles. I might top 7 miles next weekend.

Congrats! That's fantastic - particularly the part about the achilles holding up! I only had time for 6 yesterday, but agree the wind made it challenging in spots. I like to run at the Newark Reservoir but knew that would be KILLER in yesterday's wind - so I stuck to the lowlands of Newark/campus.
