Rethinking how I work out
Sunday, November 10, 2013
When I first started my weight loss journey many years ago, it didn't take long for me to fall in love with working out. For that first year, on most days I'd exercise 2-3 hours a day and I'm grateful that initial passion [or maybe it was an obsession?] and I learned all sorts of new things: yoga, bellydancing, Pilates, weights, step aerobics, kickboxing, walking, and I even ran for a while, and I finally developed some body confidence.
I'd noticed for the last year or so that my passion for exercise had grown cold and I'd go for days without doing anything. I'd developed a resistance to it, which is strange, because I love to work out. I've been able to maintain my weight [thank you, clean eating!], but was starting to get a little gooshy again.
Garry and I made a decision to work out with DVDs again--specifically starting with Jillian Michael's 30-Day Shred. We'd done it a few times before, and I'm not going to lie, it's plenty challenging. We started on July 16 and as of today I think we've missed only 2 days! And we've bought several different Jillian Michael's DVDs and used some others we already had to keep things interesting.
We get up early and work out first thing every morning and the big part of my confession is this; most days we exercise for only 20-30 minutes and I'm in the best shape of my life. The secret is consistency and sincerity. Since I know I'm only working out for a short time, I really put my heart in it. And several times during the week I do extra strength training, or yoga, walking, etc.
It's been a real revelation to me that I can get great results by committing to just 20- 30 minutes, it's fun to do it together with Garry, and it's great to be done with it before I go to work.
